I don't have a news article, but can other comrades inform me on the government's position. I know they have, in an ironic mimic of the German SPD in 1919, fought against the Greeks' struggle. Any links on the complexity of the matter?

Thanks.

Its actually pretty simple.

All you need is a minister of public order trained by the CIA,a system that comes to its limits and a revolutionary movement that keeps on hitting every single day...

Now,they have come to the point that they invade to haunts, they are arresting people for anything, using paramilitary forces to bomb our haunts, they use the media against us etc.

We on the other hand have our media(athens.indymedia.org which is one of the biggest sites in the country, radio stations, newspapers),our public faces, and the spirit of the people that has had enough with this rotten political system.Mind you, dirty politicians are a revolutionary weapon,VOTE FOR THEM!

I think we gonna be alright!;)

What is "ironic" about it? Surely it's pretty clear that, like most social-democratic parties, the Greek one doesn't have much to do with "socialism"? If anything, the social-democrats are known to have the better technocrats (in the broadest sense of the word) to manage capitalism when it is in trouble, and they are also as authoritarian as hell.

The former can be seen in their attack on social security (along with their defeated opponents ND...). "They plan a new plundering of the workers’ rights by reducing pensions, increasing the retirement age over 65 years, and promoting serious cuts in pharmaceutical care." (http://inter.kke.gr/News/2009news/2009-26pame). As for the authoritarian part, well, the police will not change its allegiance just because there are "socialists" in power. I also remember that when PASOK came to power, I read here that one of the first things they did was to violently evict a bunch of squats and occupied buildings (perhaps someone here can go into that more concretely).

Excerpts from http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/CIAtimeline.html

1947
Greece — President Truman requests military aid to Greece to support right-wing forces fighting communist rebels. For the rest of the Cold War, Washington and the CIA will back notorious Greek leaders with deplorable human rights records.

1965
Greece — With the CIA’s backing, the king removes George Papandreous as prime minister. Papandreous has failed to vigorously support U.S. interests in Greece.

1967
Greece — A CIA-backed military coup overthrows the government two days before the elections. The favorite to win was George Papandreous, the liberal candidate. During the next six years, the "reign of the colonels" — backed by the CIA — will usher in the widespread use of torture and murder against political opponents. When a Greek ambassador objects to President Johnson about U.S. plans for Cypress, Johnson tells him: "Fuck your parliament and your constitution."
