That depends. In states like NY and NJ and even in Massachusetts (where plymouth rock is, I think), specifically Boston has had large immigrant influx from places like Ireland, Italy, etc.

Plus NY and NJ use to be New Holland (or New Netherlands or something), a Dutch colony. New York City use to be called New Amsterdam (etc).

Supposedly there's some sort of advert campaign or something that uses the whole "New Amsterdam" motiff for New York City.

On the North-American side of my family, the lineage traces mostly back to France, seldom England so I'm somewhat certain I'm not related to the puritans/pilgrims.

Is this common? I think it's common for people of major known U.S. cities to say what city they are from...although normally these people if pressed would say they are from the U.S. unless they think the rest/most of the U.S. sucks in comparison to their city/state.

I do have respect for NYC though, as it's created by far the best hip hop (and music in general) of all time. Hell two of the greatest hip hop albums of all time were made by rappers from the queensbridge housing project in queens: Illmatic and The Infamous. there's a lot of gentrification going on in chicago right now, from what i understand, but its definitely not as bad as seattle in my experience. what you describe sounds more like the chicago burbs. the city itself has a lot of different immigrant populations and some solid working class history- haymarket is there after all.
