A Russian stumbleupon friend posted this to her blog. (http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/tb/a9hml)
Worker and Kolkhoz Woman is a 24.5 meter (78 feet) high sculpture made from stainless steel by Vera Mukhina for the 1937 World's Fair in Paris, and subsequently moved to Moscow. It was one of the main symbols of the Soviet State. In 2003 the sculpture was removed for restoration. And two days ago it was returned back.
A progression of the installation is available on the link.

Hehe, one time when me and my mom were in Moscow, on the square where the statue used to be, the statue wasn't there and my mom didn't hear that it was being restored. She asked a saleswoman nearby what happened to the statue. The saleswoman said that the statue was gone for good because the government hated it.
What a stupid woman.
Well, I'm glad to see the statue back again :D

I had heard they were restoring it when I saw it by surprise last Saturday. It looked beautiful in the dark, lit up by floodlights.

Sadly the national pavilions inside VDNKh have been taken over by small shops, and are dominated by billboards and advertisements around them. I am glad to see this monument back because it is a reminder, like VDNKh's front gates, that in the socialist era art was produced for the sake of beauty, rather than to sell a product.
