Listening to a lot of his stuff recently, the man is a genius.

Anybody else a fan?

Heart of a Saturday Night is a fantastic album, as is Heartattack and Vine and Swordfishtrombone.

Good call. I think The Heart of Saturday Night is his best album.

As an interesting aside, I quite like how he refuses to have his music use din advertising campaigns. He's had a couple of lawsuits, maybe most notoriously against Levi's for this; and if I remember correctly gave the court settlements to charity.

I started listening to him after watching Down By Law, if you haven't seen it already you should cos Tom Waits is excellent in it and his music is in the film aswell. The film itself is masterpiece also.

But on a more completely Tom Waits related level, I think he is a good songwriter and I like a lot of his comedic sort of poetry style stuff. My favourite album would be Nighthawks at the Diner.

yeah, Good stuff!! Murder in the Red Barn---excellent!

first introduced to him in the 1980's --- believe it or not on MTV, (they'd never play that stuff now-- do they even play music anymore??!) with definitely his most commericial song: Downtown Train (Rain Dogs)

(sorry don't know how to post the direct video, anyone want to give me instructions?!)

by the way.. that's boxer Jake Lamotta (the Raging Bull) at the beginning of the video.

My dad had the Used Songs album and I piced it up to play whilst working and had to stop working and listen to it, his voice is so unique it just pulls you in.
Jersey Girl is great song.
Anyone heard The Eagles Ol' 55, pathetic, emotionless effort compared to the Waits original

yup.. heard the Eagles cover ,, true it's kind of void.

Bruce Springsteen, (a Jersey boy) has been doing a pretty decent effort of Jersey Girl for the last 30 years as everyone probably already knows... and yet a few yards shy of the incomparable raw and gritty Waits.

tom waits is a eccentric genius. I tend to like his older stuff better..but his album "mule variations" is near perfect.

Hes not really an artist you forget after you hear him the first time. I remember when I was a kid, my dad showed him to me. He put on one really... unusual, so to speak, song, and then showed me a picture of him. Havent forgotten him since. That being said, hes pretty fucking awesome.
