Most of my books on Lenin, Marx and Mayakovsky where published by Progress Publishers in the USSR, purchased from a once socialist bookshop (now hipster cafe ).
There doesn't seem to be much on the web about them.
Do they continue to exist? Is it still possible to purchase their books from somewhere over the net secondhand.

I have quite a few of them also.
The website leninist.biz is organising a collection of ebooks of all the Progress Publishers titles you might find some there you do not have

I dont know wether they still exist, however, I doubt it. I know they cooperated with Arbetarkultur in Sweden, which was the publishers connected to the Left Party, but that was in the 70's, as far as I know. Im certain that you can still get hold of books by them online, I recently saw both Marx/Engels and Lenins collected works, published by Progress.

Try making a search there. I got around 175 results when I searched for Progress Publishers.

Second Hand books are so much better than new ones

I don't know about continued existence in some form, but I remember a time in the early 1990s when Progress Publishers was in the process of destroying their inventory of books by giving it to paper recycling. The original founder of the Marx internet archive sent out an announcement about how he had acquired some of their literature for scanning purposes by rescuing the books from being "pulped." So if there is any exstence at all, it's severely emaciated.

Good god, that's horrible! The thought of all that valuable literature being sent to the shredder is something which just makes me sick...

Me too. :(
I heard somewhere that the USSR published half the world's books before its overthrow.
Socialism is inseparable from learning and an appreciation of the value of knowledge.
Also Parenti mentioned in his talks that tons of books were recycled during the overthrow, instead of being burnt.
Recycled into what I wonder? The 'russian federation' is not known for its literary output.

I think it was in Bahman Azad's book that he said 2/3s of all books printed, were printed in the USSR (i may be wrong)

It should be noted that MIR Publishers which handled the publishing of scientific and technical books in the Soviet Union, including translations into foreign languages, still exists, although they apparently only publish in Russian now. See:

I have over 50 books on Marxism-Socialism and around 90% of them are by progress publishers and foreign languages publishing house Moscow, they are excellent, well made hard cover books. Most have blind stamping of Marx, Engels,Lenin, or Stalin on them, except the few softcover ones I have. Most have author portraits too.
I hate new books and only buy old books. Unless of course its a modern book not available in a 50-100 year old copy.
The smell of old books is great too! :D
I have a 1st edition 1944 copy of Stalin's "on the great patriotic war of the soviet union" and its one of my favorite books.
Most of my works are 1st editions from the 30's-50's and are my prized possessions.
Just search secondhand book stores and militaria stores in any town or city and you always find good scores from time to time. I spend hours and hours every week searching bookstores for books I want. By the end of 2010 I estimate I'll have around 200 books on Marxism-communism, as I'm becoming more fanatical about it by the day.LOL :D
