I want to start a thread for those of us that have automobiles/motorcycles about what to do when we encounter troubles. For now, let's keep it only to things with internal combustion engines.

I guess I'll start. I have an old automatic car. Unfortunately, after it starts, it quickly stalls. Once I've driven it for a bit it runs fine, but the gears don't seem to shift smoothly, and it seems stuck in lower gears. I was wondering if the transmission is giving out. Any way to figure out what is going on?

Does it stall out in park or once you shift to drive?

Hey thanks for the response comrade. It happens once I shifted into drive. I finally had a neighbor take a look at it, and it turns out it needs a new transmission, which after a few google searches appears to cost more than the car is worth. So I've had to go around asking for chump change to try to raise funds for the stupid thing.

Just don't make the mistake of pouring money into a dying car, I have seen it happen/it might be happening to me.
