An interesting article for American comrades. The full article is here. (http://socialistworker.org/2009/11/25/leaving-the-democrats)

Socialist Worker:

....I will be leaving the Democratic Party soon and registering as a socialist. I do this with a heavy heart, but I am convinced that the only way now to a peaceful and economically just society is through socialism.
I believe we should be at peace and not supporting corrupt governments in the name of anti-terrorism. I believe our citizens have the following rights endowed to them: reproductive freedom, an equal rights for all our citizens. I believe that there is no place in a just society for racism, sexism and homophobia, and that we need economic justice, not a corporate dictatorship. I believe all citizens should have the right to health care, an education and a decent living. These obscene profits need to end, and wealth needs to be redistributed to the workers. I also believe in open borders and an end to our insane anti-immigration policies.
Since I see our two major parties doing nothing but fighting among themselves as to which is the best to keep the evils of capitalism working, I gladly embrace socialism and its goal of peace and freedom for all.

Why would a centre-right, pro-capitalist party ever have a ultra leftist wing, or even consider allowing it's members to create one? The Democrats may be slightly more worker-friendly than the Republicans, but they are not the allies of the working class. Instead, we should consider them (and their counterparts in other countries, such as Labour here in the UK) as just as bad as those further to the right. We can't create massive change in society just by hijacking capitalist parties.

The Democrats used to be very pro-union and worker friendly back in the 60s and 70s. It wasn't until the Reagan years that they began to shift to corporate sponsorship. The New Democrats emerged with Clinton and since then every left wing party in every developed nation turned right.

Obama is the new opium of the masses, all his rhetoric and paper speeches wont save his troops in the middle east, wont right the wrongs of capitalism and wont help the struggling workers of his nation, obama is a, well he is a, well i mean........... hes a total and utter bag of shit, and the fact he can get the public eating out of his hand is as scary as shit.
RIP left wing politics in the US since.... well since the guy holding the pupets put both in his right hand.

Why would any self respecting person be in the democratic party?

If you're interested in knowing more about this party, you should see this article. (http://socialistworker.org/2009/04/14/party-of-the-rich-people) It's by Lance Selfa, who has also written The Democrats: A Critical History, which is published by Haymarket Books. I haven't read it, but it seems to offer a good critique of a party that likes to see itself as for the people, but in reality is in bed with the bourgeoisie.

Why would any self respecting person be in the democratic party?

I suppose a large number of them may be people who think that socialism is a "good idea", but find it unworkable/unfeasible. Yes, some are ardent supporters who truly believe that the Democrats can bring about change for the benefit of the people, but it's the former group that we should concentrate on, because I think if someone may be open to the idea of socialism, they will be more likely to be convinced by our ideas.

Which is certainly easier said than done. How many left-wing radicals the party contain is of minor importance.

You have the Michael Moore position of taking over the party then?

I'd like that to happen, but as long as a bunch of whiny liberals, moderates and conservitards are still there, it won't occur.

I have no position on taking over any political party in any country. I don't think we should be focussing on trying to reclaim parties that were never really ours, and instead build up leftist movements.

It'd be nice if people would stick to the topic made. If you want to talk about Moore, there's a thread for that. (http://www.revleft.com/vb/michael-moore-and-t120098/index.html?t=120098&highlight=michael+moore)
