I notice a lot of cogwheels in various symbols for organizations and such. There's one in the CWI logo for example. Does anyone know what the origin of the cogwheel as a symbol is? And what is the meaning?

The cogwheel is meant to represent modern, mechanised industry, just like the sickle represents agriculture and the hammer represents industry.
