On the evening of Sunday, 18th October 2009 workers of RICO Auto, Gurgaon who were on strike since 3rd October 2009, tried to stop strike breakers. Company security guards and strike breakers, mostly criminal elements brought to intimidate workers, responded by violently attacking striking workers. The police, that had been deployed at the factory gates since the beginning of October 2009 to control the strike opened fire on workers. One worker was killed in the firing and 40 other injured.

The article mentions nothing about the AITUC, the trade union affiliated to CPI, a revisionist party, which actually called the strike. Workers' demands were, however, much more than mere wage increase. They protested against the general practice of declaring strikes as illegal.

Though the strike, and many of the month-long protests had been organized by revisionists, by beginning of October, it was becoming more spontaneous(read, the proletariat was trying to provide class leadership). Though the strike was intended to be a moderate one, at the spot the workers were not recognizing the revisionist leadership anymore. Hence the police firings took place.
