Yesterday, 15th November, the "Bildungsstreik 2009" started: an alliance of students and pupils from all over Germany with the purpose to start mass demonstrations against the current educational system. The aims of the protestors are:
For schools:
- end the multi level school system, same education for everybody
- education for free for everybody
- more teachers, smaller classes
- end the influence of the economy on our schools
- end the repressions against pupils
- more democracy within our educational system
For universities:
- social opening of universities
- abolishment of the tution feesabolishment of every form of discrimination against foreign students
- more individual emphasis on during the study
- reduction of economical pressure and necessities
- codetermination of all involved at the educational system
- introduction of "associations of students" with political mandats in all federal states
- more professors
- encouragement of all students instead of elite education
Since 3rd November several universities have been ocuppied by the students, till now 35 universities in whole Germany were occupied, 28 are still. Several universities in Austria showed solidarity and joined the strike, occupying e.g. the university of Vienna and Innsbruck.
The "Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft - GEW" (Union for Education and Science) and of course several leftist groups like local Antifa groups, anarchists, Attac, Greens, Pirate party, Die Linke, Internationale MarxistInnen (international marxists), trade unions IG Metall and ver.di, Linksjugend (left youth), MLPD (Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany), group REVOLUTION, SDAJ (Socialist German Worker's Youth) and the CWI member SAV (Social Alternative - Forwards!)have joined the demonstrations which are planned to be held up till Thursday, 19th November.
Though it would be totally childish to believe that even 4 out of 15 demands will be realized sooner or later, I really hope that the demonstrations will change something and I think this is a very good sign and shows great solidarity. You know where you can find yours truly tomorrow: "Bildungsstreik 2009" demonstration for pupils in Munich!
