Anyway, I'm 23 and from Southwest DC. Oh, by the way Dhul Fiqar, Iceland is one of the three European countries I've been to (the other two are England and France) and it was my favorite. Cool, glad you liked it, but somewhat surprised!
I detest the place myself, but it's still home, ya know?
Icelandic society is just so isolated from the rest of the world, so homogenous and teeming with racism, and the weather doesn't really help either.
But I understand it's a great place to visit, especially if you like nature :)
I have yet to go to the U$A, but funnily enough I have a friend in DC so I'll probably pass through ther eventually.

Stalin's soldiers isn't necesarrily a bad thing. Stalin's soldiers were just the people in the Soviet Military during the rule of Stalin, which also includes world war II, therefore, any russians that fought against Hitler would be considered Stalin's Soldiers. Now, if it was Stalin's Servants.. That would be a diffirent story...

I really liked it because it was so isolated. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live there so I see your point, but it was a great place to visit. And if there were any racists, they sure didn't give me any crap. Maybe it was because I was traveling with two WASPs and an Italian.

Quite off topic, but it was good that you didn't get bothered while in Iceland, I Will Deny You. I think the fantasty football example that Scargill mentioned is quite typical, though.
It's not so much overt hate-crimes or rallies and stuff like that, but you sometimes see outrageously racist comments in the general media and even mentioning non-white immigration will trigger a few nasty comments in many circles.
Everyone was happy to accept some folks from Yugoslavia, but many otherwise 'tolerant' people have told me they feel horrified when they see Asian and black kids that speak Icelandic! Iceland has always been almost 100% white and only in the past couple of decades have non-white Icelanders been born. I hate to think how long it will take before they're totally accepted, because to many people any skin pigmentation still means you're a foreigner to them :(
Maybe we should just take this discussion to the next racism thread that opens, though...

Age is a bourgeoisie institution set up, overseen, and run by the oppressors of the people. It is meant to keep us in set social tiers, disabling any movement both physical, and mental. Any true progressive thought is cut between the tiers, disallowing fluidity of ideas. If I wish to retire at the age of 19, I am scoffed at. Who among you can tell me this is freedom. It is just another system to add to the system of systems that are forced upon us like a great pressing block, squeezing out any inkling of individuality and free-thought we might once have had. But in the head our blood mixes and in death we are physically what we were spiritually when we were alive, one.
Just messing, I'm 19 from Nuevo Mexico.

I sometimes feel I have missed the boat to change the world, I try in a very small way to re-educate people and raise awareness. However, young people have more time to devote to the cause, and may go on to change the world. Good luck to you all, I hope you really do make a difference. Never give up.

I think the age thing, unfortunately, says more about people my age than it does about those that are younger. I remember a moment of angst several years ago when I confessed to a co-worker (who I thought would be likeminded since she's a certified "hippie") of my political views, and she said, "Oh, honey -- we all were when we were your age" (I was still in my 20's at the time). She votes republican now.
The problem is that when we're younger, we're still not quite "plugged in" to the capitalist system and we're able to see things more clearly. As time goes on, we either become more radical, or buy into the bullshit and lies ("When in Rome," I guess). Somewhere, they probably suspect that they're wrong -- but the Blue Pill is more comforting.

very well said. that is one of the most common arguments we get from cappies on this site, that we are all middle class white teenagers (male usually) who are just going through a "phase" to rebel against authority. they find it hard to support their theory when i tell them that i'm a 24 year old working class latin american woman. i've only become more dedicated to my politics as i've gotten older...

I haven't become more active, mostly because what has seemed to be "available" to be active in either disgusts me, or eventually makes me nauseaus. Election 2000 was incredibly depressing -- I couldn't tell the difference, and I was determined to stop voting. Watching the Green convention that year was a bit encouraging, so I voted for Nader. 2004, Bush scared me into voting for Kerry. Do I think things would have been different? Nah . . . Clinton proved to be as big a Republican as any of them. I really don't expect change electorally.
An acquaintance tried to convince me to work on a local congressional election -- a moderate Democrat, reminded me of Clinton. "No thanks," I told her. I was a bit motivated to join the greens, but they seemed like a bunch of new-age pansies that believe change will come, I guess, if you sit around, hold hands, and smoke dope. Yeah, right. Like those people who think the independence of India had NOTHING to do with the fact that the UK was stone-ass broke . . . musta been the "non-violent protest." LOL!
I'm glad I found this place -- people my age that I work with drive SUVs and sing of the wonders of Bush. You just can't have a reality based conversation with them.

since you care so much what I drive, what do YOU drive? what socioeconomic class are you? for one, i do not have to PROVE anything to you. why don't you prove YOURSELF, and how "revolutionary" YOU are since you seem to be the judge of who IS or IS NOT "working class" or a "real leftist". second of all, if you REALLY want to know my background and who i am, just PM me instead of making statements without any backup on every thread on this forum (or you could just look at my post history). third of all, you seem to have an unhealthy automobile fetish, maybe you should find a therapist? or are you just jealous of my hot-ass wheels?
