You know which game was far better than Duke Nukem, and not misogynistic? Blood. I'm talking the original Blood, using the build engine. That was the one where you could light zombies on fire and one of your weapons was hairspray and a lighter.

Lol, never heard of it though.
Of Duke Nukem i mostly remember shooting pigs, the strippers and pissing in a toilet. Which you could do over and over again.

What amazed me was how you could swim and go underwater. A few years later that became a pretty mundane feature.

Aren't all video games?
I wouldn't say that. Grand strategy games, realistic wargames, Silent Hunter, are all examples of real thinking games. Actually I wish more kids would get into the first genre, because they would maybe develop more of an interest in history. I just got Europa Universalis III, and I was impressed to see how detailed it was, mapping all sorts of countries which existed from 1399 to the French Revolution.

I loved (and still do) Duke Nukem.
Nowadays I find his un-PC macho demeanour to be part of his charm. So he's a misogynist? I don't give a fuck. He's a fictional character, he's allowed to be.

... Because your male, and you yourself are also a mysoginist. Birds of a feather flock together.
And "fictional characters" are the creations of living people, so when discrimination comes out of the mouth of a fictional character, it was commited to paper before that by a living persyn. All dialogue, all thoughts and expression of "fictional characters" are the thoughts and expressions that went through the heads, however briefly, of the real life creators of these characters.
In the context of biting social-commentary, I tolerate it, because the implications are that these attitudes are wrong. With Duke Nukem though, his mysoginistic, chest-beating shit is elevated to the status of praise and imitation.
For much of society, a real "chicken or egg" question emerges, which is the old philosophical question "Does art imitate life, or is it the other way around?".
Now, we agree that mysoginy is social conditioning, right (it wasn't present in every society.)? If it is in fact social conditioning, are video games like Duke Nukem not a part of this social conditioning?
There is absolutely no neutrality in any realm of social life, wether it be the intelletual products of the society, or otherwise.
Also,
...un-PC ...
Anybody who uses the term "PC" to classify their opponents positions is a bigot, and an un-repentant one at that. If you contest that, then you are a bigot in self-denial.
It is bad enough that they had to legislate anti-discrimination in social interactions, because some people wouldn't be polite under any other circumstances. It is even worse when the die-hard bigots (like yourself) chaffe and grumble about the fact that they have to be respectfull to all humyn beings, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.
Duke Nukem is a bigot of grand dragon proportions, and if you sympathize with his character in any way, so are you. You can make no legitimiate argument.

My cousins and I used to play it when I was in the early teens. Not that I liked it too much. Have never really appreciated FPS games. I do not appreciate to go down and shoot at anything. I like ordering thousands of soldiers to do that for little me. ^^

I knew this was going to happen. So why did I open my big mouth?
... Because your male, and you yourself are also a mysoginist. Birds of a feather flock together.
No, it's because I realise that I don't have to see a character as some kind of role model in order to like said character. One of my favourite characters is a merciless tyrant. Does that make me one too?
And "fictional characters" are the creations of living people, so when discrimination comes out of the mouth of a fictional character, it was commited to paper before that by a living persyn.
It's spelt "person". The etymology of the word has nothing to do with sons, so you're not being a reactionary by spelling things correctly.
All dialogue, all thoughts and expression of "fictional characters" are the thoughts and expressions that went through the heads, however briefly, of the real life creators of these characters.
That doesn't mean that such thoughts and expressions are necessarily agreed with by those that enjoy them. I can enjoy watching a film about gladiators while appreciating that in real life, forcing humans into mortal combat for entertainment is morally reprehensible.
There is absolutely no neutrality in any realm of social life, wether it be the intelletual products of the society, or otherwise.
You must lead a terribly dull life, then. I suppose some people can sit for hours reading Marx and Mao, but that's not for me. I like to blast a virtual alien to pieces every now and then, and if the character can be a smart-aleck who says things that get up the noses of boring, snooty people, so much the better.
Anybody who uses the term "PC" to classify their opponents positions is a bigot, and an un-repentant one at that. If you contest that, then you are a bigot in self-denial.
How convenient for you! Well allow me to retort; anyone who mispells "person" "human" or similar words is a total fucking idiot, and an un-repentant one at that. If they contest that, then they are a total fucking idiot in self-denial.
I am respectful to all human beings, insofar as they grant me the same respect. So far you have done nothing to earn that respect. Duke Nukem isn't respectful at all, quite the opposite - but I'm not Duke Nukem, nor do I seek to emulate him.
Duke Nukem is a bigot of grand dragon proportions, and if you sympathize with his character in any way, so are you. You can make no legitimiate argument.
Neither can you, so it seems. You appear not to be able to tell the difference between liking a fictional character, and seeking to emulate them. Your absurdly triumphalist statements that I am a horrible bigot only serve to make you look very stupid indeed.
I could appeal to the fact that no women I have actually met consider me a bigot, whatever else they think of me. But that would be pointless because, paradoxically, you think you can get away with somehow insinuating that all of those women were too afraid to tell me "the facts" straight to my face, in spite of the fact I'm a skinny bastard with the muscle tone of a wet noodle, and in spite of you not having met any of those women.
Now who's being judgmental?

I knew this was going to happen. So why did I open my big mouth? http://www.revleft.com/vb/duke-nukem-3d-t122428/revleft/smilies2/laugh.gif
Because you were trying to provoke just this type of shit?
So, you were well aware of what reaction this would cause in the tiny double X chromosome minority on revleft, but you went through with it anyways?
No, it's because I realise that I don't have to see a character as some kind of role model in order to like said character.
Here was your exact quote from before:
You,
Nowadays I find his un-PC macho demeanour to be part of his charm.
So, you identify with his "un-PC macho demeanor", but hold no such views yourself?
You are so down with female liberation, but for some reason are very taken with the anti-womyn crap from this roid raging character?
You are very attracted to his views, even though they are the direct opposite of your own?
Give me a break.
It's spelt "person". The etymology of the word has nothing to do with sons, so you're not being a reactionary by spelling things correctly.
FUCK-OFF!
When ever anyone is losing an argument to me, they pull that shit!
As I said, provocation.
That doesn't mean that such thoughts and expressions are necessarily agreed with by those that enjoy them.
So mysoginy makes you smile, but you are not a mysoginist?
Don't waste my time, and don't try and defend your position.
You must lead a terribly dull life, then.
Yes, politically integrity and consistency can be pretty dull.
Hypocrisy, on the other hand, is exciting, is it not?
, and if the character can be a smart-aleck who says things that get up the noses of boring, snooty people, so much the better.
So now my objections to Discrimination are a form of elitism?
A member of the dominant gender is going to accuse me of being "snooty"?
How convenient for you!
Actually, it isn't. Ideally, society would reject mysoginistic shit, not applaud it. Unrepentant biggotry is in no way convenient to me.
Well allow me to retort; anyone who mispells "person" "human" or similar words is a total fucking idiot, and an un-repentant one at that. If they contest that, then they are a total fucking idiot in self-denial.
When lacking an argument, have a go at my spelling variant.
This whole argument started because you don't give a shit about what is offensive to womyn, and now you are continuing with that.
If I see another "why are the no womyn on revleft" thread anywhere, I'm not even going to post. Everyone knows the problem by now.
I am respectful to all human beings, insofar as they grant me the same respect. So far you have done nothing to earn that respect.
I have to earn the right for you to not condone his mysoginy, and make proudly ignorant posts?
Now who's being judgmental? http://www.revleft.com/vb/duke-nukem-3d-t122428/revleft/smilies2/mellow.gif
Since when is it wrong to judge biggots?

I'm gonna have to agree that Duke Nukem is a sexist macho-bastardo prick but i'm also going to agree that we are taking it a bit too far if we are to criticize and ban old games that are neither advertised or even remotely famous to the broad society today.
However I never personally liked the duke, who needs him when you have... DOOM ?

One must remember that before Duke 3D, FPS games were in a slump. There was Doom II, Rise of the Triad, and Heretic/Hexen. ROTT had a lot of Easter Eggs but was incredibly repetitive. Heretic was just Doom with medieval shit. Hexen was actually pretty decent, but you spent a lot of time running around the same levels until you noticed that ONE hallway you didn't go down.
After Duke, there was Blood(no ideologically negative things) and Shadow Warrior(take Duke3D's sexism, and add racism). These games had a lot more interaction in them. Then of course came Quake, and then it was on.

Prairie Fire? Serieusly, get a grip.
Let me tell you what book I recently enjoyed? The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie. All it's main character where absolutely terrible human beings. There was nearly no-one who was of any way an admirable character. Mass-murderers, evil schemers and crippled torturers. Yet, precisely because of it's characters that it was such a fucking great book.
Characters are not meant to be rolemodels: if they were, it would impossible to write a villain. In the First Law series, all character were villains of sorts, although some had more or less 'justifiable backgrounds'. In other, more black and white stories, there is also allways a villain, and their lines are also made up by real persons.
Obviously, some works thread a thin line, like Duke Nukem. I'm not familiar with the series, but I can imagine that most 10-15 yr olds don't understand that Duke Nukem, with his extreme violence and mysogyinism, is actually an anti-hero instead of hero. This doesn't however mean that anyone who likes to play this game is an mysogynist bastard. I've allways hated the USA's policy of torturing suspects of terrorism: yet I thouroughly enjoyed Superior Glokta's political games which involved just that.
On a wholly different note, it's true: it's hard to take someone seriously that refuses to spell anything ending on -son or -man.

Don't worry comrade, I played DooM at 4 and then grew up with Mortal Kombat and GTA, according to the people that accuse video games of promoting violence i should be a serial killer by now...
