View Full Version : Lenin's collected works: I want, I want, I want

I came across the complete set of Lenin's collected works in my university library the other day... looked shit-hot all lined up on the shelf, and I'm a really big fan of Lenin's writings. A quick surf around the net reveals that to get the whole lot you're talking anywhere between £500-£1000, money I really don't have lying around. But does my desire to get these books quate to, as a mate of mine said, a "socialist fail"?
Btw, I know they're all avialiable on marxists.org for free, but when I'm reading something I really hate to do it off a computer screen... call me a old-fashioned, but nothing beats a good book...

Why would some one read Lenin? I think that Tolkien was better fantasy writer.

Where did you get that prize? I got 3/4ths of his work easily under 100 euros and I even bought them individually.
Edit: Granted, they are from the 70's and all in finnish, but even so. They were printed in moscow and even have an extra page stating that they are "approved by the foundation of Marxism-Leninism, University of Moscow"

£500 is for all the volumes as a job lot from a seocnd-hand bookshop advertised on abebooks.co.uk (which is a pretty good site for picking up rare stuff). Other than that, most individual copies seem to be selling for about £20 a pop, which is almost a grand if I got all 47

There's a lot of stuff you really don't need to read in the CW. The Selected Works has pretty much everything you'd want to read from him, and it'll occupy you for a fairly long while I suspect. It's a three volume set, I got them on eBay for $50 a couple years ago. Try looking around for that.

I've got the selected works, picked it up from Oxfam earlier in the year, but I just like Lenin's writing so much I need more! Having said that, my copy of Das Kapital is still sitting on the shelf only partially read, so I should probably finish that first

Sorry if i'm being too blindingly obvious here - but why don't you get them out of the library?

Well thats weird, as the average prize I paid for my Lenin was something like 2,50 Euros per book, with few combined collections that were more expensive. Like my "Articles against dogmatism and sectarianism in the workers movement", which was something like 5 euros. What makes this even more baffling is that Finland is statistically one of the most expensive countries in the world. Apparently that does not fit in with the works of Lenin.

Yeah, stealing from a library where anyone can access them so they can sit and collect dust on your shelf is such a good idea!
Or you could just purchase an MIA DVD (http://marxists.org/admin/cd/index.htm) and have the entire MIA library at your fingertips.

I think I"m on volume 7. It's worth it if you really want to understand all the irrelevant details. But then again I'm huge into Russian history, so I wouldn't recommend it for everyone.

I'm 99% certain that Lawrence & Wishart (http://www.lwbooks.co.uk/) used to have most if not all volumes of this in stock, their prices are usually quite reasonable and I'm sure they'll be able to help you out if you send them an email or call them.

People who steal from libraries are ridiculous. Talk about individualism...
I don't get why you can't just check them out from the library and read them that way, and if you needed to reference them later, they're all on the MIA for free. It's quite economical.

I'm not judging ;). Merely wondering.

I once stole from a library. I was in such a rush at the photocopier I forgot to return the book to the shelf and left. I got as far as the door and the security guard asked me to open my bag. I was surprised when I was abroad that most (?) libraries don't have security guards and detectors near the doors. At some libraries here there are xray scanners for bags because of the political situation.
Sometimes full sets of Lenin's works appear on ebay. Stalin's too. I set up an ebay alert a while ago with some keywords and bought some great bargains.

reading and comprehending his works are much more important then selfishly owning leatherbound parafenalia.... just read them.
dont steal them, it prevents other peoples access to literature. I only steal reactionairy literature, i stole about 2 solyetzin's gulag archipels, 1 black book of communism, and 8 animal farms from my highschool library back in the days.
