Where did the Zapatistas get the term? I can't find it anywhere else.

They use the term to show that the people are their bosses, not the other way round....therefore the people are the 'comandante', and they are the 'subcomandante', below the people.

Thanks. I sort of understood that, but I'm more interested in how they found the term. Who thought of it? Where did they get the inspiration for the name? Was it spontaneous?

That's almost like asking where people came up with "comrade" or "proletariat" or any other word.
I would like to know as well, as history of words is very interesting, but I do realize that it's a bit of a strange request to ask why people use a certain word.

What was the point of posting that? To get your post count up?

EZLN is an armed force, it translates to zapatista army of national liberation. Subcommandante is a rank, commandante is above it. it is just a spanish military term.

That's what I was thinking as well, but then why was Comandante Ramona referred to in that way? She wasn't called Subcomandante.
