I don't know about the experiences of others around the world, their specific local, but I do know about my own locally here in B.C. Canada.
Without going too much into the politics of this province suffice it to say that as has always been the case historically the poor and unemployed are paying for the toys and mistakes of the rich and those politicians they have busily working on their behalf.
I have, perhaps out of a sense of injustice I have been a witness to since I was little, been a student of power-politics, and the motivations behind what appeared to be random erroneous/stupid decisions on the part of political leaders. This came naturally and I did not pursue it as a career.
Over the years I have watched as left has had power and right has had power and always, regardless of the party, the little guy/person has had to carry the weight, of broken dreams, hungry families, sparse Christmases, humiliation, loss of esteem, onset of depression, to drugs and a cloud of tiredness that would descend on the individual until just getting up to face the day was hopeless while simultaneously trying to work and avoid the sneering judgments of those around them, for the wealthy. The wealthy who in comfort and luxury, sit, complacent and all-knowing, judging, like Saturday afternoon sports enthusiasts, analyzing the merits of a replay. But this is no replay...these are lives.
Year by year I have watched as compassion and empathy for the disadvantaged around us has gone from concern and action, after the depression of the 30's, to outright hostility and snap judgments as all poor and unemployed are now judged here in 2009 with derision and distaste (n'er-do-wells the lot).
These statements are no longer embarrassed whisperings from one cruel human to another as they may have been before, they are spoken outright as if a given, and understood statement of fact. And beyond this...leaders, who in the past would show restraint for votes at least, now repeat these for all to hear as though right examples to us and to our children.
Meanwhile life becomes harder and the poor among us become more visible and in worse and worse shape. Divided among themselves, ashamed and humiliated and believing the same message that are whispered about them. There has been a loss of dignity in the world that has reached an extent that no soldier would, without confusion and divided loyalty, fight for. What freedoms are there today to fight for..it is only the freedoms of a very select few. While the rest of us are shepherded like sheep to think as we should think and to judge as we now judge, divided against ourselves for the benefit and perhaps entertainment of the few.
Would the poor and the growing unemployed be treated so shamefully if they were an organized and united whole, demanding of respect and fair treatment that is everyone's birthright.
We live now at a time when technology can feed and house everyone on this planet. We live at a time when innovation and intelligence has taught us how to do much more with less and less, like the Satellite at a couple of tons now replaces many thousands of tons of cable for information transmission. In every field this is the case whee we have learned to do more with less and less. Yet...we are increasing in poverty and unemployed and life dissatisfaction.
Why...because there exists a gluttonous, voracious leech hanging off the backs of the product maker and product consummer sucking soundlessly almost all the financial energy away that inspires creativity, more innovation, and satisfying and compassionate and empathetic lives. All this energy is syphoned off to ....what make life better for human kind? Not even close. It goes to buying anthropologists, advertising executives, politicians, statisticians, accountants, lawyers, police and equipment, etc, and etc. for the manipulation, control, and persuasion of humanities acceptance and support of the status-quo.......that being the maximizing of consumption of human energy, while proportionally increasing the maximum level of suffering in people, for the maximizing of product consumption by those same people, to momentarily reduce that suffering and ...to do so.... while keeping the masses safely....just below the threshold of their revolution.
This would not be possible with an informed, organized and peer motivated populace...that was perceived by the politicians and the powerful as a UNION.
The poor and the unemployed must be unionized or this leeching cycle will continue, except that it will be:....unabated...ever more refined in its functioning.....and ever more powerful convincing in its control.
Since when does a local city police force need military weapons, such as the "MRAD" (MRAD = The medium-range acoustic device (MRAD) can use sound as a weapon, emitting piercing sounds at frequency levels that cross the human threshold of pain and are potentially damaging to hearing, say audio experts.).... for, as they say, "as a public address system" .......these are the peoples police are they not, for our protection, our childrens protection, for our seniors, our women? ((It brings to mind a poll or list.. that would be of interest to just get a general idea about all of us here in so-called democratic societies what each of us could recount about our local polices purchasing behaviour and statements of protocol on public protests and public group gatherings))
I know this..that the news I have seen over the last nine or ten years has shown that police are becoming much less the protectors of the public and more one a stance of antagonism and expected violence and confrontation with the public.
Just to get the record strait as to my ideological and philosophical bent I am married, low middle class, 52 years old with 4 children aged 14 to 26,...and have honestly....voted all over the spectrum through the years.
I cannot stand idly by any longer...
So tell me....How can the Poor and the Unemployed be Unionized?
Think of the comfort this would bring them on an emotional if not financial level...and the power and respect, as a block, they would then be afforded. Think then of how the distribution of legislation would be affected, how police protocols, both written and unwritten, toward the homeless and disenfranchised would be modified.
I have watched police deal with the homeless on 2 separate occasions once while at a fair distance and once while almost on top of the two..the treatment was as you would expect very different in the speech and the body language toward the poor fellow when I was close. There I stood a moderately attired middle class, responsible male he behave as if on trial.
How can this be done?...we must Unionize the poor, homeless, unemployed and otherwise disenfranchised in our societies? To pull them up will reward us all...and in many unimagined ways.
My thank you to those who tolerated my thoughts here and especially thanks to those, in advance, those who provide me with some directions and possible solutions to my question.
