If you've been restricted a while you know the drill but to reiterate for anyone who might be new:
This is the thread for all the offtopic nattering that you will be tempted to engage in whilst posting. This is the only thread in which you are allowed to be offtopic and engage in (light) spam. Doing so elsewhere in the board will probably get you warned.
Pretty much every other rule applies, so keep your racist jokes and sexist comments to yourself.
If you want to continue the argument that you were having at the end of the last one please do so outside of this thread. It's meant to be lighthearted not a great big cake & arse party full of shouting.
Now have fun.

You Brits contrast "lighthearted" with "cake & ass parties"? Whatever a party full of "cakes & arse" is ... and I have my suspicions ... it doesn't exactly sound like a funeral wake.

A "cake & arse party" has a similar meaning to "clusterfuck" but I already used the other in a thread recently so thought I'd try something else.

Oh yeah since everyone here is really into obnoxious tl;dr articles and quotes you (and everyone who gets fed up of scrolling past your shit) will be glad to know that we've got spoiler tags.
This means you can hide obnoxious walls of text behind little spoiler buttons like this.
Use them just like any othe tags (with the [open][/close] set up. The word you want in the brackets is "spoil" as in "interminable articles from my favourite austrian economics webshite spoil this website for everyone".)

It can be okay if you're really into hops. I tried a few american ales and some pub, I was pretty wasted at the time so I can't remember much about them except they were some of the most hoppy beers I've ever tried sometimes excessively so.

I thought of importing some decent unusual beer bottles as complimentary christmas presents this year so anyone here got any recomendations?

Does sound a bit boring, although I personally wouldn't mind being able to only get my local brew here because the nearest brewery is this one (http://www.harveys.org.uk/) - which I have been pretty much shilling for since we started discussing beer on revleft

Can't think of unusual bottles, but unusual contents:
http://www.crackedkettle.com/store/images/Banana_Bread_Beer.jpg
It does in fact taste of bananas, if you like that kind of thing.
http://www.wychwood.co.uk/images07/bottle300_beewyched.gif
A beer with honey, it's like mead and ale had a beautiful child, although if you want unusual beers (at least in name and label) the whychwood brewery is damn good bet: Hobgoblin, Golaith, Wytchcraft & The Dog's Bollocks are all beers from that brewery. Although I'm not sure if you can order them where you are; it seems that you can't from the brewery website anyway.
Also it's not all that unusual but you might want to try this if you can get hold of it:
http://www.deadpan110.com/wp-content/gallery/reviews/p3230245.jpg
At 7.3% ABV in a 500ml bottle it's certainly got some bang for you buck.
I've no idea, however, if you can get ahold of any of the above. If so, sorry for tantalising you with these three delicious options.

My brother lives in London at the moment so I can bypass that problem by ordering them to him. Thanks for some tips.

Harvey's? That must be the same house that bottles the Bristol Cream (http://jerichowine.com/item.asp?PID=837) sold in the USA. I don't know why anyone would want to mix up a bunch of perfectly good Spanish sherries as they do, but they've sold tons of it, so they must know what they're doing.
Hmmm ... I wonder if they import inferior sherries they get cheap from Spain and mix them up to disguise the flaws of each. Next time you're in there, tell them my theory and ask them if I'm crazy.

Ah no, different company. Harveys of Lewes has nothing to do with the sherry. It's an absolute mystery to me how bristol cream became popular at all I think it tastes awful, but then again I don't think I've ever had a sherry I enjoyed.

If anyone's interested here is Bud Struggle's famous "Cheep Eatin'" Salmon Recipe featured in the Obesity thread:
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons minced red onion
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon drained capers, chopped
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 1 1/4-pound skinless salmon fillet (1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches thick)
1 pound string beans, trimmed*
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
Preparation
Whisk first 6 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Season sauce with salt and pepper. Preheat oven to 450°F. Cut three 1/2-inch-deep slits crosswise in top of salmon (as if dividing into 4 equal pieces but do not cut through). Arrange string beans in even layer on rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with oil and turn to coat. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place salmon atop string beans; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast until salmon is just opaque in center, about 7-10 minutes.
Transfer string beans and salmon to platter. Spoon sauce over salmon. Cut into 4 pieces along slits and serve.
*It is better to use asparagus--we just didn't have any the other night.

We should mass produce the female reproductive organ on an assembly line. Artificially made with realistic biological materials.

In frozen form the salmon here is cheaper than the trout for example and that sucks monkeyballs (no offence to people with weird fetishes) since salmon is the most boring tasting fish there is.
This friday I got hold 2 meals worth of delicious crabs (3 kilos or something) for me and the missus for less than 8 pound, the cheap wine I bought to go with it were more expensive. It's weird when crab is cheaper per kilo than meat paste.
I love buying crabs from the old fishermen standing on the wharf, then you get to boil them yourself and get it fresh. Buy a lemon and a loaf and dinner is served.

Aye. If the advice is to eat salmon then it is actually cheaper to eat out. (Case in point that fiver could get you a much larger and filling piece of fish at the chippy, along with a portion of chips and perhaps a saveloy or pickled egg).

Well, for £5 I could get a large portion of chips, a saveloy and a steak & kidney pie.
Which contains considerably more of the stuff you need than the piffly wafer of fish available at the supermarket. I was only using the fish thing to highlight the absurdity of salmon prices - when you can get another fish that is not only larger but cooked and battered for you at a lower price then what's the point. Salmon isn't even all that great either.
Robert
22nd November 2009, 22:21
Quit comparing salmon to cod. There's no way eating out can be cheaper since cappie is passing on the labor cost to you.
Go to the market, buy a piece of cod or haddock like your local chippies use, which isn't salmon. Make the batter with egg and flour, batter it yourself, buy some oil, drag out the skillet, put the oil in the skillet, turn on the flame, fry it, put it aside, peel and cut some potatoes, fry those, put them aside ...
Now eat them. (Put American ketchup on the chips, not vinegar.) Open a nice cold Budweiser to go with it. It won't kill you.
Schlep over to the sink, wash and dry the skillet. Store the oil in a jar so you can use it again. Haul the potato peelings out to the trash bin.
I probably saved you a penny right there. Wasn't too much of a pain in the ass either, was it?

Excuse me, but how the fuck is salmon cheap? I always thought it was "posh nosh" - and judging by the thin slivers of fish flesh you can get in the local Tesco's for about £5, that thought seems justified.
Here in sunny Florida salmon is less expensive than cod. I can get Salmon for $5.99 a lb on sale and cod cost 7.99 a lb. Also an order of fish and chips in an authentic English restaurant (cooked by an authentic English expat) cost 7.99 for lunch or $8.99 for dinner. And that's battered cod (3 pieces) and pre frozen chips.
(And any food is boring of you don't know how to cook it. :tt2: )

The point isn't comparing like for like. It's ridiculing the idea that a meal including salmon constitutes cheap eating. If a meal calls for a single ingredient that costs a fiver then something has gone horrifically awry. That's like saying it can't be cheaper to eat out than to go out and buy your own lumpfish bloody caviar.
Go to the market, buy a piece of cod or haddock like your local chippies use, which isn't salmon. I know how to cook fish and chips you condescending prick.

Ketchup and budweiser are fucking rank. I'd probably be drinking a cheaper but far superior beer.
Schlep over to the sink, wash and dry the skillet. Store the oil in a jar so you can use it again. Haul the potato peelings out to the trash bin.
You could also compost the peelings if you were growing your own ingredients which also saves some money.
I probably saved you a penny right there. Wasn't too much of a pain in the ass either, was it?
I don't know whether or not it was a pain in the arse because I'm a fucking human being. It may have escaped your notice but the amount of hassle a given task appears to be can differ hugely; some days you can be having a bloody whale of a time as the pleasure of cooking hits you in waves of transcendent joy and on other days you can barely dredge the will to operate a microwave much less fart arse about with fish.

What's "awry" about it? And you mean 5£ for one serving of uncooked salmon? The fishmonger is ripping you off, unless you and Bud are talking about wild salmon, which I enjoy maybe once a year.
I know how to cook fish and chips you condescending prick. Then you ought to do a cooking show for the telly: "Right, we're back from a fucking commercial break and we're about done, see? If any of you assholes are still with us, I'm about to dredge the bloody cod in this bleedin' batter. Pay attention, shitheads, I'm not doing this twice and ... what? Fuck the censors. Is it my show or ain't it?"

It entirely misses the point of cheap food. Eating cheaply tends to work out at pennies a meal (if you know where to shop, what to buy and are prepared to risk malnutrition.)
And you mean 5£ for one serving of uncooked salmon? The fishmonger is ripping you off, unless you and Bud are talking about wild salmon, which I enjoy maybe once a year.
What else is implied by "the thin slivers of fish flesh you can get in the local Tesco's for about £5"?
Then you ought to do a cooking show for the telly: "Right, we're back from a fucking commercial break and we're about done, see? If any of you assholes are still with us, I'm about to dredge the bloody cod in this bleedin' batter. Pay attention, shitheads, I'm not doing this twice and ... what? Fuck the censors. There's already one sweary gobshite on tv in the form of this overbearing and smug tit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Ramsay). Then again I won't be describing sixty quid truffles as being worth the price as he did a few years back.
Snob.
I really don't have to justify myself to you but I simply do not like ketchup, I don't know why I just don't. As for budweiser I'm not about to pay over the odds for six 330ml bottles when the same price could net me six 500ml cans of a much more palatable lager.
WTF?
I go on to explain after the semi-colon. I'm sorry if your attention wandered in the time it took for your eyes to drift over the punctuation mark.
I suppose, if you're ill or hungover some days. Otherwise, no, not so much.
Really? So you've never had a bsuy day at the end of which the last thing you want to do is fanny about in the kitchen? You've never decided to have a supper of something like curried beans because fuck it you can't be arsed today? I refuse to believe that's the case.

Tonight's meal for 4.
Ham. $.99 lb from Winn-Dixie (Bought a 10 lb ham.)
Sweet Potatos. $.45 for four.
Asparagus. $1.45 lb.
Ate about 1/4 of the ham (actually less then 2.5 lbs--but that's accounting for the bone and fat.)
$4.30 for a meal for 4. That comes to $1.08 per person.
We'll get maybe 3 meals out of that ham--maybe add dittalini and broth to ham bits and get Pasta Fasol for a night or two and then use the bone for pea soup.
That's how you eat cheep.

Had lunch with an Englishman (he said he was English, NOT British for some reason--I had thought "British" was the correct term to use) and he induced me into having what he said was a real traditional English drink--Pink Gin
It's a Martini glass full of gin (Beefeaters in this case) with a dash of Angostura bitters. Pretty strong--but not bad.

In 1984, there's a really long line of people shivering, waiting outside the Kremlin to buy toilet paper. After waiting for almost 3 hours, one fellow says, "That's it. I cannot take it any longer. I am going to go and kill Gorbachev!"
He storms off in the February snows.
About two hours later, he returns to the line, and says to the fellow behind him, "Excuse me, comrade. May I have my place in line back?"
"I thought you were going to go and kill Gorbachev!"
He shakes his head in dismay, "That line was longer."

Someday I would like to be a Food Service Specialist (http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/cgjobs/blfs.htm) in the United States Coast Guard, also known as, well, a cook.
I think it would be a great job. You get a steady pay check, job security, learn a great skill, get to eat all you want, serve your country without invading any other country, and you don't have to participate in all those emergency drills.
When the siren goes off for some annoying drill, and everybody else has to haul ass toward battle stations, dragging heavy firehoses or manning mortal machine guns, with some pimple-faced ensign yelling at them to go faster, there I'll be, down in the galley, casually rolling out dough for breakfast biscuits, sprinkling powdered sugar on some hot apple fritters, trimming the edges on a nice latticed pie crust, marinating pork loin for "Hawaiian Night", or casually chopping onions for a hearty beef stew. I can't wait. Nobody messes with me in my galley. You wouldn't want a little "secret sauce" on your burger now, would you? That's what I thought. So be nice.
I'll send you guys a post card from the St. Lawrence River, the Port of Houston, or Lake Michigan. Wherever there is a coast, there I'll be, guarding it from inside my nice warm galley. Doughnuts, anyone?
What is your dream job, that is, after the revolution?

Not a chance in hell. I find it difficult to 'get into' a religious holiday that is to celebrate the miraculous birth of a dude, if he even existed at all, on a date that, supposedly, wasn't even his real birthday (the calendar system was changed), who claimed to be the son of a 'god'.
I don't know which is more tragic:
1. Christianity
2. A society of consumers who are inspired to buy a bunch of shit they don't need and exchange gifts beside a dying pine tree.
3. A market of capitalists who don't give two shits about a dude named Jesus, but only the enormous profits they will make after the store shelves are cleared by the aforementioned consumers.

Listen to this from the end of Dicken's A Christmas Carol:
“A Merry Christmas, Bob!” said Scrooge with an earnestness that could not be mistaken, as he clapped him on the back. “A merrier Christmas, Bob, my good fellow, than I have given you for many a year! I’ll raise your salary, and endeavor to assist your struggling family, and we will discuss your affairs this very afternoon over a bowl of Smoking Bishop, Bob!”
It seems Bourgeoise and Proletariat sit down as friends at the end of the story. Such is the power of Christmas. :)
Forget the Communist Manifesto, what we need at RevLeft is a couple of bowls of Smoking Bishop!
Here's the recipe:
• Take six Seville oranges and bake them in a moderate oven until pale brown. If you cannot procure any bitter Seville oranges, use four regular oranges and one large grapefruit.
• Prick each of the oranges with five whole cloves, put them into a warmed ceramic or glass vessel with one-quarter pound of sugar and a bottle of red wine, cover the vessel, and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours.
• Take the oranges out of the mixture, cut in half and squeeze the juice, then pour the juice back into the wine.
• Pour the mixture into a saucepan through a sieve, add a bottle of port, heat (without boiling), and serve in warmed glasses.
• Drink the mixture, and keep Christmas well!

Oh yeah, oh yeah
He's got seven limousines
And a private plane...
All for the use of his

Oh yeah, oh yeah

Girls love to stroke it
While he's on the phone
Oh yeah, oh yeah

All along the way

And the govenors agree to say:

He makes it easier for

All of you...
Yes, that's true!

In the common man
Snatchin' up money
Everywhere he can
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
He's got twenty million dollars
In his heavenly bank account

In the company of my comrades I am pleasant and social..a fellow friend and proletariat, brother, mentor and student...in the presence of the enemy, I am a monster. As a statesman and leader of the vanguard I took an oath to spare no capitalist the guillotine. Surrender now and you will be provided with a modest living. Refuse, and you will know the horrors of the gulag.
Also, my neice went to Oral Robert's U. She said the students were mostly rich and haughty. Lots of kids wore mink coats to class, etc.
Of course. For thousands of years the bourgeois ruling classes have always congregated together with their finery and cryptic, nonsensical philosophical idioms. Everybody knows it is 'a priori' true that rich kids make it to Heaven. Well, maybe I shouldn't say 'everybody'. Only specialized philosophers can decode the logos, see, so only they know the ultimate truth.

Hey guys, been a while since I've posted in these parts. Just been stretchin the legs a bit since serving my OI sentence...
Anyways, some serious stuff I wanted to post. I'm getting closer and closer to that day when my bourgeois dream of owning land will be complete. And you know, shit, look at this piece of property:
http://www.landwatch.com/Apache-County-Arizona-Homesite-for-sale/pid/46000242
$1900/acre. Yeah, that's expensive because you're only buying one but still. It's all yours. Granted, that's not the best example due to the fact it's 1 in 6 properties all next to each other and there's no well as of yet (let alone the house) but goddamn son it's all yours. All yours.
Not his. Not hers. Not theirs. Not ours. Yours.
And while the utopia of socialized land use will render this all moot, I am very much planning on getting a piece of the pie while it's being cut up. Not the one I linked to, no no no that's a bit to small. For $100k you can get 600 acres in Nevada miles away from a paved road in extreme isolation (with a spring/stream). Smoke all you want and grow what you want it is all yours.
Or, rather, soon to be all mine. Hopefully someday, maybe even within a couple of years. I've had enough of this paying landlords to make them rich, then having the old people next door complain that I enjoy my music loud as can be. Never again!

- Users should always have had a say in this forum's running precisely because this forum is what it is.

It had pros and cons. When I was a member of the CC, the best thing about it was watching all the drama unfold, it was like a soap opera. In general, the process of voting on changes to the rules was very divisive and tended to result in people who were disappointed with the result complaining a lot and trying to circumvent the decision (not always unjustly, because I think a lot of bad decisions were made). Also when push came to shove the CC were relatively powerless to stop unpopular or abusive actions by mods and admins. That was my experience anyway, but that was a long time ago.
But in other ways it was a very positive thing. On any popular forum, especially a political one, moderation policy is very important and needs to be discussed. The CC was a great way for getting some really meaningful discussion on moderation policy and ethos going, and I have praised it and recommended using something lie it on other forums.

Good point. I think the mod policy around here is really fair and honest. I've been moded only once and I have to say the mod (now admin) warned me first and then dinged me when I continued my behavior. This place is reasonable, fair and honest if you play by the rules--and maybe that's the work of the CC. If so, then good for them.

Actually it is played out on a number of threads. De-moding threads, CC nostolgia threads, admin power play threads, mod v. admin threads. I imagine that the CC is like what the people's Soviets will be like right after the Revolution, starting out nice, then comes the politicing, then the strongman takes over.

I don't think a new site would be the right thing. I like this site--if run correctly. I think after 5,000+ posts I've been around here long enough to say that I have an interest in the continuation of RevLeft. I enjoy the discussion and I would like the site expanded to include more people into the Socialist world view. I would be happy to donate the site to some sort of Foundation after I buy it. If you want that to become a condition of the sale--I have no problem with that.
I learned a lot here. I hope others can do the same.
BTW--Thanks IA, I'm throwing this idea out there--if anyone has anything further to add please do so!
[Edit] How about this--"I" don't buy the site--we buy it as a co-op? Maybe we could even fine a "friendly lawyer" that could draw up some papers for free? (Hint, hint!)

That's too bad. I noticed we've had a lot of agreement lately. It seems like we have one less libertarian-socialist on the board now who's also a moderator for a while, which sucks (and may mean I cut down on my posting now lol).
I think it's good to take a break from politics though, especially when you hold views that are outside of the mainstream, right-wing free-market system and are even marginalized to a large extent by the left (which is unfortuante). I'm not sure if that's why you're taking a break or not but from my experience it's sometimes difficult holding far left views.
Anyway, take it easy man. Hopefully you retain your interests in politics.

jazzratt, I have this fantasy of you going up on a windy mountaintop, with nothing to sustain you but deep thoughts of the CC and OI, a cold bottle of Liebfraumilch, a round of Emmantaler, and some fresh-baked bread. Bluebells and daffodils sway in the meadow below. Worker bees buzz and hop from one bloom to the next on behalf of some fat, indolent queen -- nature's machinery, humming along according to God's great plan.
On that peak you will take a swig o' wine, bite off a hunk of cheese, get a little buzz happening, and ask yourself this question: wouldn't I really rather be ... restricted?
Come onnnnn, man. All it takes is one politically dubious post and you're in like Flynn! (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/198700.html) We'll show you how to do it if you're unsure. We're good at it.

I do win no matter how things turn out.
I can buy RevLeft and give it to the CC and if RevLeft succeeds it shows me that Communism is something worth looking at as a serious alternative to how things are now. If we view Communism in light of sound Biblical principals--and Communists could succeed in little things (running RevLeft) then they should be entrusted with bigger things (running the world.)
If a Communist run RevLeft fails--then it shows me that Communism may not be worth the effort.

Wow, what a frigging knockout!
I absolutely love it and have sent it along to friends and family. I think I like the Israeli and Azerbaijani contributors best. Norway, Germany and Slovenia, Gabon (!!!) and Tanzania were terrific too. Cambodia and Montenegro also just great.
Thanks, Bud. I love you, man.:blushing:

You know, the same thing occurred to me. (For real.) But you gotta admit that kid has got the groove.
And . . . dad-gummit I forgot to give an attaboy to Qatar, featuring the guy in the scarf playing a solo line on the Oud (Syrian lute).

That's an interesting comment. For all the time I've been on this site Commies have been talking about Class Struggle, Class Struggle, Class Struggle and how everything people do relates to it--and I really just don't think that's the case--it's one of the factors that motovate people I'm sure--but it's maybe 11 on the Top Ten List.
But when I read a comment like anticap's (and I'm not on your case here anticap) I can see how you Commies think that way. Instead of what I or Robert sees in the video--some very interesting musicians doing some really interesting things. You guys see it as another case of Class Struggle.
We really do view the world in different ways.

Oh yeah, I heard that one a few years ago on the radio. He had that telemarketer scared out of his wits.
If I'm not mistaken that same guy has a whole repertoire of personas he assumes when telemarketers call, including one where he is ...um ... having a wank, as you Brits say. The telemarketer notices and says "did I call at a bad time"?
He answers: "Oh, no, man this is great time."

The guy you feature is Jim Florentine (http://www.expressnightout.com/content/2007/08/meet_the_creep_jim_florentine.php). I can't find the "wanker" youtube, and it's probably verboten on youtube anyway, but here is another funny one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvaIqLsPCOU) by Florentine that shows links to more.
And if you like this kind of thing, here's a different guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTJhnuQMbL8) who uses multiple simultaneous voices, using tape, to confuse his victim. Also very funny.
"You call and don't even know what you're talkin' about."
"Please put the phone down before I snap."

Well, I'm interested in everything, but it sounds like it's some kind of image manipulation software? What image do you want to manipulate? And into what?
If you think you can make me look like Fabio ... I'm in!:)

Yes, Gimp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP) is an image manipulation software. Its for a project. I make webcomics, but i need to have them smoothed out and looking more professional (imagine how they look in MS Paint...).

Of course. I understand. (I was even in the IWW for a few moments till Pogue and RGacky made me quit.) It's just that I didn't look at that video in light of Class Struggle. You do.
Nothing wrong with that.

In light of the growing problem of sex addiction, I am establishing a treatment center in a niche market -- for nudists.
There will be a 12-step recovery program.
Step 1: Everybody take off your clothes.
Step 2: ????

In the day when I was but a baby Bourgeois my company had a Nudist Colony as an account. My truck would drive there once a week and my guy would do his stuff--and every now when he was going there me being a good Capitalist I would ride shotgun with my driver to make sure properly oppressed.
Anyway, the Nudist Colony--it was filled with 90 year old guys with HUGE droopy shlongs and 90 year old women with HUGE droopy breasts. And they all looked like that. I once gently asked if the place I was at especially catered to older people--and the answer I got was "No." I was told that "polite" Nudism in Nudist Colonies was more a thing for older people.
Hopefully when the Revolution comes it will make Nudism mandatory for everyone.

But as long as we're on the subject, you know what you call a man who doesn't wear any underwear?
A swinger.
