A simple question: do you miss Soviet Union?

I do. I'm a Marxist-Leninist (what the Trots might call a 'stalinist'...)

He probably doesn't. Aside from that, we've had the exact same thread 5,549 times in the past 4 weeks alone.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever seen the epic 1972 Soviet movie 'Siberiada' aka 'Siberiade'? The premise sounds interesting: it's about 3 generations of two families (one rich, one poor) starting in the early 20th century via the October Revolution and WW2 and ending in the early 70s. It's something like 4 hours long and apparently so powerful that it won awards at film festivals in the West despite advocating a a distinctly Marxist reading of history and promoting communism (as well as doing a bit of whitewashing here and there).

I tried to watch it on DVD, but unfortunately from the 2nd chapter onward the subtitles kept coming in 2 or 3 cues too early, which made for annoying viewing.

If anyone is aware where I can download a correctly subtitled version, please let me know.

I do remember that Stalin took an illiterate nation of peasants and turned it into a literate, culturally-achieving, scientifically-achieving, electrified nation.

Nothing to contribute? Don't post. I don't miss the Soviet Union because I was only born in 1987, but I imagine that if I could remember it, then yes, I definitely would.

Nothing to contribute?

My contribution was to draw attention to a Soviet movie called Siberiada, thus sexing up a thread that appears several times a week with a slightly different title. The OP just stomped into revleft, sneered at half of the people in the room ('Trots'), and then went on to make an unoriginal/commonplace statement about Stalin.

I did "miss it" (in another sense) because I was born in its late stages. But if I was born earlier, I would have been very interested in how a variety of socialist society looked like. So in the sense of analyzing the society, economy and politics of a socialist country and learning from the experience, yes I do miss it. That doesn't mean I'm nostalgic about it or I want to recreate it, although it provided a magnificient example of a possible implementation of socialism.

What aspects of it? Nothing is so simple and black and white. Besides I was born a month after the Berlin wall fell, so that's how much I remember personally about the soviet union.

No, I tried to watch it once but I was very tired and only saw the first few minutes of the first part, all I remember was a big building exploding. I would like to see it though, maybe when I've got a couple of months to spare I'll watch the whole thing.

I miss not having a somewhat large socialist alternative in this present day world that forced western nations give consessions to their working class. But do i miss the soviet union? i dunno i havent lived in an age where i actively experienced its existence (1987), i just remember seeing 2 germany's on a map when i only thought there was one. I do miss the prensence of a soviet union in this modern day world.

I think we're under more danger of nuclear destruction now that there is no longer a M.A.D. balance provided by the soviet deterrent.

Why start this stupid topic?

This is meant to be a non-political thread. You lot will work yourself into the ground if you don't have a good discussion about something other than the revolution.
