View Full Version : Forcing women to conform to the wests idea of beauty.

Pressure on women in nearly every nation on earth, is mounting.
It is a pressure to look like the white tarted up unreal women we see on western dramas and motion pictures.
The demand for skin whitening cream is so high that a black market has opened up resulting in thousands of women buying crude homemade whitening cream, which often leaves the womans face scarred.
South Korean actress Lee Young-Ae is a high profile victim of the pressures to change her appearance, she was scarred from the cream, which doctors say is untreatable.
Even if every tub of cream could be guaranteed safe, this stuff is still harmfull, it hurts women who feel ugly and undesirable because of a judgemental society.
I find all women of all colour, religeon, creed beautifull and i think alienation of women who do not fit the white blonde big breasts mould should be stamped out and looked at more seriously by us left wingers.

Good observation, and I totally agree.
But let us be realistic on this issue, I would form topic title like this
women conform to the wests idea of beauty.

I don't see any forcing being done whatsoever.
We could expand on this by mentioning the recent topic, anniversary of fall of Berlin wall. You remember those images of people pushing themselves through the barbed wires? Were they forced? no.

People get seduced easily, that's why you have religion for centuries.
Capitalism is also a major seducer. Its propaganda crushed ours and that's why we have masses running towards the capitalist killing machine in ecstasy.

You mention women, seen the TV lately? Virtually every commercial, every movie and every bit of TV time is constructed in a way to make people feel ugly - especially women.
Although I hear that this trend is quickly spreading to the male domain, while I still think its bollocks, results are already there.

An average person feels bad after watching that crap. Either they are not pretty enough, don't have such good friends, such nice houses etc etc.

Thus People mimic TV people.
And the bitter conclusion? Majority of people are suffering from the sheep syndrome.
As soon as we leftists stop singing poems about how masses are great and how they *got tricked* into exploitation, sooner we'll be able to accomplish some tangible results.

Where as I do take it as a serious and an unfortunate matter, the quilty one is regional cultures and obsession about conformity. The idea that white is beautiful is nowhere near universal oppinion, even in single countries. In some regions the dominating trend is opposite, as it is in here where latinos are considered the most attractive "race" in the mainstream culture.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything?
I'd push down the Berlin wall if I were there. What is this patronising bullshit?

That's a very one dimensional view of force/power (based on the premise that in order to exert force you need to have the power to do so). By your definition workers are not forced into wage slavery as they can always choose to starve on the streets.

A girl who lives near me poured bleach on herself to make her skin white because all the lads near her used to pour tipex and shit on her.
He has not been heard of in a while someone broke his ankles with a sledgehammer.
Wonder who did that to him.....

I was with your post up to this point:

Why do we have to insist that women are beautiful? It's not only the Euro-centric measure of female beauty which is the problem, but the fact that in most cultures, the worth of a woman is judged by her appearance and an ideology of beauty is applied against all women.

The fact that oppressed people often engage in behaviour which reproduces their oppression is not such a surprise. Part of being oppressed is to experience powerlessness and feel the only way forward is to compete according to the rules set by the oppressor.

That people become complicit in this and give the appearance of acquiescence doesn't mean they're any less oppressed.

Boots, is it really mounting? Isn't this nothing new?

We all have a different perspective of what makes someone beautiful and not all women and men are dictated by the media.

That's rather extreme in this case... Not sure how that applies to what he/she was saying about women not being forced into keeping up their appearence. Could you explain?

what you just explained, the tv commercials, is pretty much forced on us. While, we aren't forced to make ourselves beautiful, the influences are forced upon all of us...which is pretty similar to basically saying, beauty is forced on to women.
this is like saying that the masses aren't forced to be oppressed, they could just quit work, and die, like Barabbas said.
or as the bourgeois claim, if they work harder, they'll surely "live up to the american dream"

As soon as we leftists stop singing poems about how masses are great and how they *got tricked* into exploitation, sooner we'll be able to accomplish some tangible results.

awww....but singing is fun;)
we can sing AND revolt at the same time, gosh...

and, i disagree that the masses didn't "get tricked." The bourgeois gave women voting rights: TRICK
the bourgeois promised us the american dream, with the nice car, good wife, nice home: TRICK
the bourgeois presidents claim to fight for the little people: TRICK
...and there are so many more

um...sorry, but i don't understand how this part is relevant...

Well I'm from America. I've only been here for a few months. :)

I suppose I just feel differently because the woman I was around didn't seem affected by the media. They didn't shave and would most of the time not bother wearing make up. They were just happy and fine with how they are...maybe that's why I feel this way.

I've seen the woman that guys look at (pornography) and they're generally not thin or sickly looking, they look curvy and health. I really don't think most men demand that their wife, girlfriend, etc should be skinny or anything.

I've never felt forced into anything though I know, in all honesty, if I gave up on my appearance I'd never have a guy show interest in me...So what am I supposed to do? Is it wrong that I bother trying to look nice for guys?

No need to swear comrade, I see that you get upset when a different view is introduced on topic. So go work on that.

Let us not be to hasty now.. conforming to the ideas of "beauty" is not comparable to living on the streets.
This is like saying that nature is forcing oxygen upon us in order to survive.

Topic is about women, and people in general, who are to weak to swim against the tide.
This is a matter of them being conformists, not being exploited.

Workers are exploited, but beauty is a part of human vanity.
You HAVE a choice of treat your body in whatever way you want.

Let me decipher this for you in details:

Capitalist comparison of work and idea of beauty

1) woman subject #1 - shops/acts high fashion = gets to live
2) woman subject #2 - doesn't want/can't afford to follow trends = gets to live

1) worker subject #1 - choses to work/finds work = gets to live
2) worker subject #2 - doesn't work/cant finds work = dies

Don't be hard-liners guys n gals, let's be reasonable and demand impossible :)

I think that the issue is not about looking good, as much as it is about what exactly does look good. Why western beauty standards? Why not chinese or african beauty standards? Does it tell something about society if only white women are seen attractive? Or is it really so that only white women are seen as attractive? Also, is our society hellbent on looking good? Are women expected to look good only and do nothing else?

To my understanding these are the issues raised. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that this is a very strange statement. Apart from the fact that creed generally means religion anyway, how on Earth does somebodies religion effect your perceptions of whether somebody is beautiful as surely beauty is a physical thing.

Colour on the other hand is something that can effect perceptions of beauty, remembering that their is no objective criteria for beauty, but that it is only our individual perception of what is physically attractive. There is nothing wrong with finding some people more physically attractive than others. Personally, I don't find the pale, blonde Northern European women attractive. Nor do I particularly like big breasts. However that is only my personal preference, and if it were opposite, I don't think that there would be anything wrong with it either.

You can't have political policy on who people find attractive.

I think some people need to accept they just aren't mainstream attractive.

However, obviously I don't support the exploitation of minds that is deliberately done in many western media.
