90% of people carry the common herpes virus in a dormant state, which in rare cases can spread to the brain, causing retrograde amnesia or other memory loss disorders, or even death.

Why do people ask obvious questions without checking Wikipedia. No one should ever ask a question you can't find out in less than two minutes reading Wikipedia.
Herpes labialis (also known as "Orolabial herpes"[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_sore#cite_note-Andrews-0):368) is an infection of the lip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip) by herpes simplex virus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_simplex_virus). In many cases, it causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth that are commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters.

On the wiki article, it made no mention of a link with herpes as an STI, so I'll assume I didn't get the cold sore virus at the age of 9 thus.

Ah, so they go by the much more trustworthy source of some random twat on a forum. Makes perfect sense.
