What's wrong with the upcoming olympics in Vancouver?

I hear everything from the money (now supposedly in the billions) could have been used for housing (or presumably whatever) to displacing of poor/homeless as well as 'not on native land'.

Who pays for the olympics? Where did the billions come from?

let's not talk about them (http://www.revleft.com/vb/rational-anti-olympics-t118891/index.html?t=118891&highlight=olympics)

So what's this? Are you Jazzratt's apprentice now?

The thread hayenmill links to outlines a lot of the arguments against the olympics in general. I don't know how much it goes into what's specifically wrong with them in Vancouver, but I'm fairly sure all the criticisms already raised apply.

Anyway, if people still want to discuss it here they may as well do so rather than pull up the old thread.

Now that's just rude...

Just the continued marginalization and oppression of indigenous people and the land they still have left. Nothing to worry about cuz I wanna to watch me some figure skatin.

Not one Olympic event ever made money or even broke even. For example, the Olympics in Montreal 1976 cost the city over 3 - 10 billion dollars total (true cost is still unknown) and the people of Montreal are still paying for it through their city and provincial taxes. Was it worth it?

This is pretty much all I hear. It's like the organizers are reading off poster board demonstration signs one after the other.

I could also claim that a triceratops went on a rampage down town while riding a bicycle and swinging a golf club.

Evidence? Is anyone actually gathering evidence? Where is it being kept? I want to see it. I want to make my own mind up.

thanks

Well until someone invents a means of rapidly searching large amounts of information and listing results that they think are most relevant to what you are trying to find, I'm not sure I can help.

Results?

You mean 900 pages of slogans and philosophical statements.

I can go down the list of every FAQ page on any anti whatever website and ask How? and Why?.

As an actual resident of British Columbia where the Olympics are taking place I can say that they're actually bankrupting us. The Provincial Liberal government already had to make cuts to public services. For one example, working class families in many areas actually have to pay fees for their children to ride the school bus. Seems only the wealthy will have the privilage to go to school in the near future if this shit keeps up...
