This is suprising to me, seeing as many famous socialists were "scruffy".

During one of the government encirclement campaigns in the early 30's, Mao had deprived himself of a haircut so long that when someone wanted to take a photograph, Edger Snow thought that he looked very odd and he put a hat on Mao. Yup, that photo is one of the most famous ones of the chairman. :)

Lately I've been growing my hair in accordance with the traditional values passed down from my father that he practiced.

And by that I mean from his days as a dirty nuke protesting hippie.

So, I assume they don't really consider women in North Korea to be as intelligent as men, if they don't mind the length of their hair?

I think that could be one of the greatest finds ever. Unfortunately, I must now trim my hair in accordance with the socialist lifestyle.

So, I assume they don't really consider women in North Korea to be as intelligent as men, if they don't mind the length of their hair?

I guess so.

Women are depriving themselves of valuable brain nutrients by growing their hair out.

Hair grows at the same rate whether you cut it or not. So how should the "absorption of nutrients" vary?

More dead cells absorb more nutrients, do they?

NecroCommie

Why waste my cells when they grow anyway? I am proud of my extra long ponytail and baroque beard.

More hair takes up more shampoo and takes longer to wash. It's also heavy to have a lot of hair. The most practical and socialistic thing to to is to shave your hair military style. A few swift swoops and your all well and done.

North Korea's state-run Central TV even identifies violators by name and address, exposing them to jeers from other citizens.

"We cannot help questioning the cultural taste of this comrade, who is incapable of feeling ashamed of his hair style," the station said on Monday, showing a Mr Ko Gwang Hyun, whose unkempt hair covered his ears.

"Can we expect a man with this dishevelled mind-set to perform his duty well?" the announcer asked.

In November, a North Korean broadcast chastised men with long hair as "fools who abandon our own lifestyle and mimic other people's model."

More hair = more socialist.

The fact that N. Korea urges it's subjects to shave their heads just reinforces this highly scientific equation.

Along with long hair, untidy shoes were identified as the epitome of western culture which, by imitation, would lead the country to ruin.

Baggy pants must be punishable by death.

Unwashed long hair is disgusting.

I have washed long hair, it's probably not very useful (ie when the police want to use it for very unhippy things such as dragging you along), I should really get a skinhead but you know, I think it might make me look abit odd, not that everyone looks odd with a skinhead- a lot of people look better with one in fact.

We should all shave our hair in accordance with the skinhead lifestyle to be fair, those of us who don't are counterrevolutionary, except me.

In seriousness, while the campaign is odd I think there are a few points which need to be raised.

I often see many students and leftists with long hair or beards. Why? How can we explain this phenomenon?

I am a student and a member of a left-wing organsation yet I shave and have a haircut often.

Why do those males with long hair feel compelled to grow it and why does this group seem to be confined to the organisations of various shades of left opinion and students?

I can only imagine the ordinary worker's opinion of a load of ragged Anarchists with beards and long hair because I know what mine is, however judgemental it may be.

It originated* as a mild form of rebellion against standard work requirements emphasizing short hair and a clean face; since the protest era it has just come to express male independence, which makes all of this very ironic. Long hair isn't anti-capitalist, but the fact it came about as a rejection of some iconic bourgeoisie conditions is enough explanation for why you don't see conservative businessmen breaking into this habit.

* Post-industrial genesis; obviously men had long hair when they were scratching out existence in huts.

Semi-long hair is fine. Very long hair usually doesn't look good, though.

Also, it's interesting to see that the "hair discussion" is only about boys.

I didn't know there is a haircut that women can have that would decrease their likelihood of getting a job. I may be wrong, but short, long, medium have been acceptable haircuts for women for a long time.
Maybe bald, but that is the only one I can think of, and it doesn't look all that bad.

I don't see any of these women having a problem getting a job based on their haircut. (with the possible exception of the lady with the crew cut, but personally think it looks good)This guy however....

Yeah of course. But I still wonder about people who bang on about what kind of hair is "acceptable for socialists" (). I can't help but think that they just kind of assume that all ladies have pretty, well-groomed long hair. I think the whole "debate" is pointless. The guy in your last picture looks bad because he has a funny look on his face and stuff like that, not because his hair is long.

My point wasn't that he looked bad, though now that you mention it he does look kinda funny. My point was that a man with long hair and a beard, especially unkempt long hair and beard, would have a harder time finding a job. I for one had to shave my beard and cut my hair before I could get a job.

Depends where he's looking for work and so on. I've met plenty of people who have longer hair than me (given that it's now about 3mm rather than shoulder length that is quite a number of people) and are considerably more employed (i.e are employed at all). It's not a haircut that will get you an office job or a job around food but I've seen plenty of bartenders and the like with hair/beard set ups of that type.

I have the longest hair in my class. Take that! And I like keeping it in a two-stage ponytail, with little strands of hair flowing romantically from my temples. A quaranteed bait for women (tested and proven), but in my trade which tends to be somewhat conservatist it might be a hinderance.
