Ernesto "Che" Guevara - Madonna's Appropriation of Che's Ima

This may have gone under the title of Che's image, but I thought in light of the recent release of Madonna's "This American Life" a separate topic would suffice.

I don't think any other person of popular culture has revelled in one's ability to market her image as Madonna has. I am not a fan and consider her basically cutting edge for middle class suburbinites, but when I saw the cover of her latest cd I hit the roof. Now I suppose we could shrug it off as just another person trying to make cash of a revolutionary's image, after all that is what Madonna does best. What annoys me is all this "don't envy the rich as they have their problems too" attitude. Her latest single has a "rap" going on about all the trappings of the wealthy and still not being satisfied. And I am supposed to feel what when I hear this Madonna??? Sympathy? Pity? Not bloody likely. I think having to choose btw paying the rent and feeding one's kids is more dire than some wealthy scab trying to find their spiritual path. Affluenza indeed!!!

It is the picture of her, I dont know if it is on the cover of an album but it is definately on the advertising posters around on fences and so on.

She is wearing a beret and is in a similar pose to Che.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. Peronsally I don't have an opinion but just think, what if Madonna really is pissed at the US? What if she really is changing her views? Don't pre-judge guys.

I'm naturally very skeptical, and I don't like the way she is using che-s image, but it's nothing different to the Golddigga hoodies I see so often, worn by people whyo have no idea who Che is, it's just a picture to them , it looks "cool", so does Madonna, but maybe there's a little bit more to it, for her at least. I don't trust it but I don't think we could expect anything else. In this current climate of celebs shouting out against war, etc, it was inevitable that someone would use this kind of revolutionary imagery.
