I vaguely recall reading that certain Anarchists and early Bolsheviks regarded the nuclear family unit as reactionary. Any pointers to some key writings and theorists about this and other forms of "counter" sexuality?

Engels on his own invested quite a few thoughts into this subject, actually. The composition and assigned roles in a "nuclear" family are reactionary thus:

A great deal of socialist feminist thought focusses on inequality in the family. You might want try reading Meg Luxton, Wally Seccombe and Pat and Hugh Armstrong.
A google of "wages for housework" unleashes a torrent of good stuff.
Within the Second Wave feminist movement (ie 60s, 70s and 80s) feminists of all sorts critiques their roles within families. Socialist feminists included a Marxist analysis that focussed on the value of reproductive labour (household chores, child and elder care). The biggest political/social gains have been around reproductive rights and the establishment of non profit child care.
Some leftists have called for the abolition of the family. It's a bit like abolishing nations -- easy to do in the abstract, harder to do in reality.

The patriarchal family and the political-economic system based on masters/slaves came altogether.
Marx opposed "women's community" to the bourgeois matrimony but without developing this thought further.

Voltairine de Cleyre, an anarchist and early radical feminist, dealt with this subject in "Those Who Marry Do Ill". http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_Archives/bright/cleyre/theywhomarry.html
