I'm looking for recommendations on some good revolutionary songs. Nothing in particular, I'm just searching for a healthy cross-section of whatever the people's movements have to offer.

Thanks in advance.

Check out "Revolutionary" by Radical, an english hip hop artist.

He's on RedWatch, so that makes him revolutionary enough

Redwatch? That's good enough for me. Great lyrics, too. I can't think of another musician now days that's so straight forward

Jesus, it's even crappier than Immortal Technique.

Just listen to The Coup, Public Enemy and early Dead Prez for hiphop.

Other stuff is The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Max Frost & The Troopers and the Dead Kennedys.

I would also suggest The Nightwatchman. I prefer the earilier stuff but it's all good. Also Street Sweeper Social Club, and the classics, Rage Against The Machine and the even more classic Woody Guthrie. I would also recommend going to riotfolk.org

There are plenty of conscious artists out there. Stuff like the Coup, Dead Prez, Immortal Tech's already been covered. But still check out Sabac Red, Talib Kweli, Blue Scholars, - you'll find conscious aspects to most non-mainstream hip hop. Pete Seger, Billy Bragg, Woody Guthrie (if you're in to their sort of stuff), Randy (swedish punk), Anti-Flag...

A lot of the stuff in this (http://www.revleft.com/vb/rapidshare-megaupload-album-t116529/index.html)thread is overtly leftist.

Tbh, I don't agree with most of what radical says on RevLeft, but his songs are good.

I guess this counts. The composer is an anarchist of sorts.

Try the song Lenin by Benign. Look it up on youtube it's amazing. It is an ode to Lenin in his glass mausoleum.

None, they're all shit! :p

Seriously though, there is a nice collection of old-school stuff here: http://communisme-bolchevisme.net/telecharger_musiques_mp3_livres_communistes.htm#Mu siques (you might have to click "Musiques" or scroll down)

The nice thing is that this stuff is from several countries, not just the usual angry American rappers and punkers, or English folk artists. Some of the German stuff is so bad it's good, content-wise ("The party is always right" - text from "Lied der Partei" from the DDR...). The few Paul Robeson songs are nice though.

I believe Dave Mustaine is an anti-communist and a supporter of Reagan. In fact I think he is an asshole altogether with a serious attitude problem, but at least the music is good

It could be that he's a libertarian "anarchist", or then he's just a turncoat. I do however recall him identifying as an anarchist in a random interview from the late 90's.

Frank Fernandez is a wonderful Cuban artist.

As for popular revolutionary music, I think most of it is dross, Public Enemy is a possible exception.

Ray Collins - Freedom Fighters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=972jLVYvqwM

The lyrics to this song is a must-learn for all Republican Socialists.

I'll sing you of an army brave
Who fights from the cradle to the grave
The people will no longer be slaves
For the INLA freedom fighters.

Followers of Connolly
They fight to bring us liberty
Socialism we might see
With the INLA freedom fighters.

"Saoirse Go Deo" is our cry!
The Starry Plough our flag flies high!
England's tyranny we defy!
We're the INLA freedom fighters!

Rising throughout the land
Connolly in head: gun in hand,
The working class will take a stand
With the INLA freedom fighters,

Fighting for the working class,
The priest condemns us at the Mass,
But this will not turn us from our task
As the INLA freedom fighters.

To meet the Tory tyrant's greed,
A volunteer a bomb did leave,
To kill the imperial Aire Neave
'Twas they — the freedom fighters!

Murder, torture, imprisonment,
Our movement is still not spent,
We vow to make our foes relent
We're the INLA freedom fighters.

The Brits try to criminalise
Our comrades, who on The Blanket lie,
Make sure that the fight does not subside;
We're the INLA freedom fighters.

Captured guerrillas to jail are sent,
Prisoners of war, their time is spent,
With heads unbowed and knees unbent —
One unbroken freedom fighter.

The news in 1981
A hunger strike for rights begun,
But an empty victory was won
For all the freedom fighters.

At British hands died Bobby Sands,
McCreesh and Hughes for the Five Demands,
O'Hara's death our symbol stands,
we're the INLA freedom fighters.

Aye on beneath our banners high,
To avenge our comrades who have died,
Let the fight go on as Patsy said
For the INLA freedom fighters.

I'll sing you of an army brave
Who fights from the cradle to the grave
The people they'll no longer slay
For the INLA freedom fighters .

Followers of Connolly
They fight to bring us liberty,
Socialism we might see
With the INLA freedom fighters.

"Saoirse Go Deo" is our cry!
The Starry Plough our flag flies high!
England's tyranny we defy!
We're the INLA freedom fighters!

Im more into the oldies. revolutionary punk rock doesnt cut it for me. I find the old orchestrated, chorus-tic(?), and acoustic revolutionary music much more appealing.

I like this song, I kind of agree we are stuck with an unthinking majority.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQeRG72E3OM

lyrics:

We don't need your democracy
Execute them kindly for me
Take them by their filthy nostrils
Put them up in doggy hostels

We don't need your hypocrisy
Execute real democracy
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority

Anti-depressants
Controlling tools of your system
Making life more tolerable
Making life more tolerable

Anti-depressants
Controlling tools of your system
Making life more tolerable
Making life more tolerable

We don't need your hypocrisy
Execute real democracy
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority

Anti-depressants
Controlling tools of your system
Making life more tolerable
Making life more tolerable

Anti-depressants
Controlling tools of your system
Making life more tolerable
Making life more tolerable

We don't need your hypocrisy
Execute real democracy
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority

We don't need your hypocrisy
Execute real democracy
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority
Post-industrial society
The unthinking majority

I believe that you're wrong
Insinuating they hold the bomb
Clearing the way for the oil brigade
