This movement is known in mainstream American discourse as that which pushed for and eventually got us the IRR (Initiative, Referendum, and Recall). They are also famous for their opposition to corruption, which fueled their call for the weakening of political parties and their bosses.

How are we on the left to regard them? Some have praised them as champions of democracy, while others, even within the left, have blasted them as "regressives" who actually opened the door to greater concentration of political power.

Is there any leftist literature which takes a critical look at them?

The first thing I found was Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others (http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/pdocs/dubois_booker.pdf) by W.E.B. Du Bois. Not necessarily a leftist publication but there you go anyways. :) I need sleep atm but later on I'll add more.

EDIT: Sorry, this (http://www.isreview.org/issues/53/haymarket.shtml) and this (http://www.isreview.org/issues/67/featrev-debs.shtml) were the best I could do.
