I recently finished reading Howard Zinn's "A People's history of the United States" and absolutely fell in love with his method of telling history. I love how he shows the U.S state and ruling class for what it really is, and I absolutely adore the very concept of a "People's History"

I'm curious to know if there are any worthwhile books on Australian history that take a similar perspective to this.

Absolut

Ive read a book called Corroboree, by Neil Richard, which I thought was really good. It isnt a book that goes through the Australian history like Zinn does with the US, its about the aborigines, what happened to them and so on. However, I cant seem to find it anywhere in English. While searching the National Library of Australia, the only copy I could find was in Norwegian. Might have something to do with it being banned in Australia as soon as it was published. Either way, if you can get hold of it, I really recommend it, its pretty damn good.

I googled the phrase "A peoples history of Australia (http://www.amazon.com/Constructing-Culture-Peoples-History-Australia/dp/0140110577)" and actually found a book with that name, written by Verity Burgmann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verity_Burgmann), who seems to have a socialist background, being a member of the SWP in Britain and some other radical movements in Australia. Havent read the book, so I cant really say wether its any good, but it might be worth checking out.

That's great, thanks!

(I should have done that to begin with rather than coming straight here :blushing:)

You would be surprised by how good internet forums can be for these sorts of inquiries.
