Just yesterday I got approached by a woman who said she a missionary aand was working in a church called Jesus Christ's Church. She was decent enough and not very pushy (she had a wierd foreing sounding dialect), she left when I said I wasn't very found of churches, but on some further research when i got home I saw that the church was a Utah based mormon church.
I can really imagine the Mormons, " Ohhhh no, Norway is becoming godless. We need to save them, let's send some missionairies over."
Hilarious.
Has anyone else encountered mormon missionairies in "developed" countries?

I'm from a part of Lancashire where part of a local river is a holy place for them, we have a huge Mormon temple a few miles away and due to their choosing my home city as a good place to find converts, I've most likely got thousands of Mormon cousins in the US (I already have hundreds of them on my family tree).
They don't come around here too often anymore, although a few months ago a couple of them (one British, one American) came to our front door, and we said we weren't interested. A month or so later, I was walking down a street near my house when a Mormon stopped me and asked me if I was interested. He seemed a lot younger than the other two, about my age.

Do the good thing, talk their ear off, keep them at your place. You never know, maybe you'll convert them to socialism...

Neh, she went of the buss at the next stop after I said I didn't like churches that much. Talking prolonged with fundamentalists is boring anyway.
I wonder how much of an uproar it would be if conservative muslim missionairies where walking around.

And built recently a huge church in Espoo. And these are the AMERICAN ones. You know, since we lutheran pagans need saving.

Yeah I was raised Mormon as well. Don't feel special in Norway, they go everywhere a government will let them. And I mean everywhere. Most members aren't english speaking, by the way.

Hahaha. But yeah, I was given a Book of Mormon by a classmate of mine, read some of it. The stuff in that is even crazier than the stuff in the Bible, and that's saying a lot.

Hmm, I wonder if the Church of Jesus, has a conflict with Smith's friends (our version of mormons).

OMG (excuse the pun), why on earth are morons going to Norway? Its not like there isnt enough churches there is it? How on earth could they believe Norway is godless? They must have come over in shiploads from USA during the 30s and 50s then?:D

Dont feel special just yet, the mormons are based in almost every country, not just Norway.
They have missionaries therefore in almost every country too.

Why the dichotomy? If you can have christian socialists, I'm sure you can have mormon socialists.
As far as i'm aware, mormonism doesnt carry any greater reactionary baggage than mainstream christianity.
Actually, i did chance upon a group of mormon anarchists (http://www.themormonworker.org/links.php).

Sorry. (http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/world/)
They've got 3 bloody temples in Africa.

To be fair to them though, if you believe the bible then the book of Mormon doesnt take such a leap of imagination. The only extra stuff they say is that the Red indians are descended from the jews and that Jesus went to America after the resurrection.

Yeah, the worst part is they start to employ local turncoats to do the proselatizing so you kinda don't expect it.

yeah i live in CA near 2 temples. i heard one of them talking to another person about them trying to build another one in the area but the city/state wont let them because theres too many.
mormons kind of remind me of the church of the 3rd revelation or whatever in "There Will Be Blood."
i ran into a group of 3 while sitting at a park. respectfully chatted and didnt buy into any of it. i live in an area where within maybe 5 or 10 miles theres going to be 20 churches of different christian sects. its rather annoying to say the least. I also have a few morman friends. The "mission" is something that is required(i think) of males to do once they reach adulthood. after that they go to a dance to get hooked up*(hosted by the church) and then married. i think they also purposely have more women at the dances then the men to promote variety for the men. since they "choose" their wife.
Mormons are actually nice people though. smart and culturally talented. its sad to see religion being the drive behind all of this(in my point of view) but still, it is a good product of it. the bad part is they are spreading EVERYWHERE.

Yes. They actually have a church in my town. They generally are quite polite people. Most of them are Americans, and quite conservative. But they seem to be fond of Sweden.
One fun thing is that Joseph Smith prior to his revelations was known as a con-man.

The mormons send missionaries all over the world, my home town had a large mormon population, I knew a guy who's mission was in Chicago, another for Germany. It is kind of a creepy ideology... the whole religion demanding children and expending thing... I dislike the idea of it... in morals they are no better or worse than any other devoutly religious Christians... but the idea that you need to make more people of your religion just for the sake of expansion is just... creepy...

In 1978, Spencer W. Kimball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_W._Kimball) received the revelation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_Revelation_on_Priesthood) extending the priesthood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priesthood_%28LDS_Church%29) to all worthy male members of the church regardless of race or color. After this, the church decided to open missions in West Africa."Oh hai guise, i just took some acid and had a revelation; it turns out only some black people are the devil, but mormon jesus thinks you guys rock and are white on the inside"

Do Mormon missionaries wear black coats and have tags that say "Brother ____" on them? I see a lot of them on the bus... usually 4-5 at a time, every Sunday. They try to strike up convos w/ bus riders.

They tend to have the tag with "Elder/Sister ______" and the chuch name like this one http://www.freeldsart.com/images/clipart/elder-name-tag.gif
From wikipedia: "Full-time LDS missionaries are required to adhere to a dress code: for men, conservative, dark trousers and suit coats, white dress shirts, and ties are generally required. For women, modest and professional dresses or blouses and skirts must be worn. In some areas these standards are altered slightly. For example, in hot, humid climates, suit coats are not required and dress shirts may be short-sleeved."

Mormons are nothing new to me. My town is full of them. There was this girl in my former high school who was dating a Mormon guy. She was going to convert in order to be with him.

One of the general apologies for this is that because the Church was fucked with for many years (and it was, Missouri sent an extermination order out on all Mormons when they attempted to settle there), God decided it was more improtant to found the church and 'restore the gospel' and that black men could receive the priesthood and become leaders at a later date.
Whatever.

Spreading religious propoganda is technically illigal in Turkey. They don't really apply this law to Muslims, but they do deport Christains who go knocking on people's days and bothering them abou god.

I once sat next to two mormons on a flight from Paris to Stockholm. Right when I sat down, the guy right next to me looked at me, smiled and asked me if I had accepted Jesus in my life. It was the longest flight Ive ever been on.

If it ever happens again, tell them you're interested, and try and keep a conversation going about it. After a while, ask that you would like some info so you and your boyfriend can check it out.
The reaction would be priceless, assuming you're a guy of course.
