I read this the other day, and I'm never eating hot dogs again...ugh. Has anyone else read this? Sinclair originally wrote this to be published in a socialist magazine, and it is a true testament to the strength and determination of the worker to get a few more dollars to support his or her family.

And I quote for the benefit of Felicia:

"In the rooms where they made sausages it was the worst. Sometimes, the machines that chopped up the meat to go in the intestine sausage casings caused a finger to be separated from a worker's hand, and if after a minute's searching it could not be found, the finger would be presumed lost and business would continue as usual. After all, it was not them that consumed the sausages!"

and this:

"Some of the meat storage rooms were overrun by rats, so the meat was sometimes covered in droppings. To combat this problem, workers laid out poisoned bread. When it came time to process the meat, the workers just dumped it all in, poisoned bread, poisoned rats, and rat droppings included."

the best part concerns the wheel that they use to skin the pigs.

Being a Communist and not a Liberal, I was far more interested in and angered by the way humans were treated in the book, not the dumb animals.

This is truly a Socialist masterpiece, and every Communist should read it, in particular American ones. A gripping read from start to finish.

It's the book which formed Howard Zinn's views.

ah, so what, as long as they don't poison you and taste nice it doesn't matter what they put in them.

Must "stinking liberals" be mentioned in every one of your posts?
