oh definitely a bad thing. would you rather hang out with guys who do nothing but drink whiskey, drive convertibles at unreasonable speeds and snort blow off ladies, or guys who wish they were smelly, hairy vikings?

I also love folk metal. Eluveitie has made it into the hearts of the mainstream, with their song "Inis Mona", but I prefer Equilibrium any day.

Eluveitie is great. Have they really broken into the mainstream? In America even most people who listen to metal still laugh in surprise when they here about folk-metal.

Unfortunately, when you take one of the best things in the world and mix it with one of the worst things in the world, the result always reflects the latter.
Folk is fantastic. Please stop ruining it.

Comrade Dimentia-
I LOVE THE VIDEOS!!!!:D

Yeah, its pretty unfortunate because mainstream "metal" in the United States is mostly shit. (Black Label Society, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. which I don't even entirely recognize as metal) Iced Earth and Agalloch are in my opinion the best metal bands in America, but they are mostly underground. I'd stick with European metal, not just folk, but all kinds, melodeath, thrash, doom, etc. its all better in Europe. Hopefully good metal will have a revival in American culture.

Didn't there exist some previous thread about folk-metal?
However, Turisas and ensiferum are awesome. Moonsorrow and Finntroll follow up. I love those bands live, best fucking pits ever!
oh definitely a bad thing. would you rather hang out with guys who do nothing but drink whiskey, drive convertibles at unreasonable speeds and snort blow off ladies, or guys who are free and proud warriors?
The latter!

Wasn't on that one, but yeah I've heard that too.
Going slightly offtopic, I was watching this one band "Roctum", since part of their live show is throwing sandwitches to the audience during the song "sandwitch" (talk about imagination). Also, I recall there being some controversy over a Nasum concert when some fans (note: not the band) slaughtered a pig in the pit.

I have heard them on radio at leats thrice.
I think the difference between the European and American metal scene is that the European (and Middle Eastern) metal scene has endless influences they could borrow new sounds from, while the American metal scene (which was the original metal scene) has not as many influences as the United States is less culturally diverse than Europe and most musical styles are younger. Folk metal and black metal are borrowing heavily from pre-industrial folk music.

Yeah NWBHM (New wave of British Heavy Metal) really changed the metal scene for the better I think.

When were talking about mainstream metal in America then there is really almost none to speak of outside the occasional nu-metal or hard rock with sorta crunchy guitars. Outside of the rare metal song that finds its way to the radio metal in America has been diversifying. Of course the main trend in this diversification is metals mixing with hardcore and the genres that have come out of that. Bands like Killswitch Engage, As I lay Dying (both not great and no terrible imo) and a few other metal-core bands have developed pretty large followings. Then theres deathcore which is largely shit but has the occasional decent band (All shall perish).

Folk metal is the greatest music ever. (especially eluvietie and ensiferum) but i think there should be more lord of the rings metal. that would top the genre off.
