Has anyone read or seen this play?
My uncle has two copies of it and he's giving one to me. I should get it in the next 20 minutes and I'll start reading it at work this afternoon..... Has anyone read it? Is it good? It's kind of a peaceful exchange so he can get his university reader back, I was reading some of Sartre's essay on Existentialism.... but I suppose that's another topic ;)
"man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. Such is the first principle of existentialism" ...... me likey :cheesy:
So, anyone read this play? A long Day's Journey into Night?

You people suck.
I've read the first act and I'm on act 2 scene 1. It's interesting so far but I still don't get the point. It may be a play held in high esteem, but the plot so far would make one shitty novel.
It's set in coneticut (or so I assume is the location of the summer home, but they talk a lot about Ireland, they're Irish.....), it's a nice play but nothing eventful so far, but there are 3 more acts to go :cheesy:
It's autobiographical, I've figured out thus far that the author uses "Edmond" to portray himself (Eugene O'neill), his father has already referred to him as having "anarchist" and "socialist" thoughts/opinions. I still don't know what the play's about though, I'm sure I'll figure it out soon, it'll all come together I'm faithful of that. :)
I repeat, HAS ANYONE READ THIS PLAY?
edit: I had the wrong location as the play setting.

pish posh, I guess no one cares about great literary plays now a days........
I finished reading the play, the mother is a morphine addict, I hope I ruined it for you all!
needless to say, it's an excellent play. I've read a lot of shakespere and that's most of what I have to compare this to, although they are very different styles of writing. I recommend this play. I find that there is a great likeness between the character "Edmond" and Che Guevara, I'm sure that others will see this likeness aswell.
I wash my hands of this thread, and of you people.

well, it's just that shakespere is the only stuff I read (aside form the crucible). O'Neill is famed as the father of American Playwrites. The play was actually quite good, well written aswell.
Morphine is a pain killer, and addictive, this play is set in the late 1800's-early 1900's so I assume it was prescribed easily back then. It's a factual play noless. I really liked it.
I think that your teacher would be impressed if you requested this particular play ;)
plus there are references to neitzche ("the man with the unpronouncible name", lol), rousseau, Oscar Wilde (even marx and engels are mentioned when talking of books in their possession) and all those great people and being the young boy's main "morbid" interests ;)
Great play, definitely! I'm glad that atleast one person isn't brain dead around here :) ;)
Few people have even checked out some other threads I've made on some books. *sigh*, they can like what they want, it's doesn't bother me any. I'm getting a bit restless of che-lives :(

Is your quote from the play? Its cool!
About what time did O'Neill write this play?
I want to know more about O'Neill
If O'Neill writes like Miller then I think my teach will let us put this play on...she loves the Crucible, its been done three times at the school.

Yeah! My sig's from the novel! I love it, I bookmarked it and everything, it's from when she starts to go nutty. She's an odd character ;)
The play was published a few years after his death (1953), I think that it was his wife who got it published. O'Neill lived from 1888-1953. The setting takes place in the summer of 1912. He didn't start writing plays until 1913 though, and this play wasn't published until 1956. :)

I see. Its cuz I wanted to see what came first the Crucible by Miller or this play...
Crucible was written in 1953, the same year that O'Neill died...so I guess the Crucible came first ... I know that was pointless but if a guy is going to be know as the father of American playwrites he has to have come before Arthur Miller...
Miller was born in 1915 and his first play was published in 1947 (all my children).

"I am far from being a pessimist ... On the contrary,
in spite of my scars, I am tickled to death at life!"
TEE HEE lookit thats his quote up there! I found it under his picture right now right now.
Ah, never mind this guy was way before Miller... his first play was in 1922 ...
