MilitantAnarchist

For everyone in the UK, there is a program on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm called The Enemy Within, and it isdrawing parallels between Anarchist attacks on Victorian London and today's radicalism, examining how feelings of oppression, persecution and anger can lead to extremism...

Gotta be worth a watch...

I assume it will be very anti-anarchist and peppered with ridiculous claims and propoganda, I will watch it nontheless, thanks for the tip.

I've just watched it... and as we would of assumed, a load of shit... basically.
To me, it came across to say that 'anarchy' was another case of 'annoyed immigrants'... also i like the fact that they LIED about Peter The Painter and the whole Sydney Street thing... not a mention that Churchill burnt the place down and stopped any form of rescue... but that is for another thread....

I know that anarchism was in large part born out of immigrant oppression world wide (the anarchists in America like Louis Lingg, Sacco and Vanzetti, ext) but i'm fairly sure it was never exclusively for immigrants (them comparing it to Islam extremists, but obviously that is for Muslims and not oppressed working people as a whole)....

And as fair as i'm aware... wasnt the anarchist violence directed at the police?

I watched it aswell. Didn't very much like the sentiment of the program to begin with. taking the Anarchists = Terrorists approach. I liked the bits later on when they let the muslim guys talk and when they exposed Scotland Yard for plotting a terrorist attack and locking away Anarchists for it.

I think we should be proud of anarchist struggle here in london. Russian anarchists in Tottenham managed to make the frontpage of the NY times way back in the 10s. :p

Sorry MA but I have to dissagree.

I had low expectations of the programe before watching it and at first I was not very impressed. I didn't like the presentation which was in a fast cut cctv style and like Stranger than Paradise said, I suspected that they were making the simplistic case that Anarchists = Terrorists. I also found it difficult at times to be sure if the words being spoken were historical or contempory.

As the program developed though I think the main point was not that anarchists and muslims were the same but that both were treat the same and demonised as mindless terrorists by the state unwilling/unable to even consider their motivations.

OK, so at a certain level I would expect that most of us already understand this but I felt that the program illustrated the point in a way that increased and clarified my own understanding. This included the fact that the "immigrant" status of the anarchists and the muslims was far from the most significant issue.

As Stranger than Paradise also said, the parts were the young Muslims spoke was very powerfull.

Overall, especialy considering that it was a mainstream program, I thought it was well worth watching.

Yes towards the end of the program my view also changed. It was with the revelation that the supposed anarchist plot to blow up a theatre was engineered by MI5 that I think they wanted to portray the demonisation of the Anarchists, as they demonise the Muslim community today. I don't think it was particularly anti-anarchist it just wanted to display the way they were perceived and show the absurdity of the claims that were made against them.

Also, I particularly like the comment the man made about Colin Powell calling 22,000 deaths in the first hour of the first Gulf war collateral damage. Yet we see no condemnation of these acts in our press but we see plenty condemnation of the terrorist attacks committed in our western countries.
