Basicly it seems like Gordon Brown's still all too eager to carry on Thatcher's legacy of privatising everything from the Chunnel to handing over student loan repayments to private buisnesses.

I'm particualy concerned about the student loan one. I'm not a student, but I do have debts with some private agencies who will think of nothing to use every dirty trick in the book to try destroy the standards of living that people have to claw back this money and slap on ridiculously huge charges at the slightest whim. When students went to uni they grudgingly accepted that they'd do so on a loan, not a grant, but at least the loan was to a relativly accountable source. Now the deal's broke. If you're a student, then you have to deal with the cowboys of the financial industry, indeed stuff like your credit rating and previous relations with employers could now effect your eligability for a loan in the first place. Education would be returned to an exclusive club of those who kowtow to the bourgeois and have the right background only.

Thatcher would be proud of the Labour party.

They have been privatising things since they took office. This round here isn't actually that significant compared to some of the previous ones. This one is more down the the Government being desperate for revenue than anything else.

This seems to be a common mistake people make. Tony Blair even invited that old biddy over to no 10 when he assumed office, presumably they swapped top tips on how to beat down the striking workers.

They want to continue her legacy to try and "take control" of everything, if you will. Of course, it's backfiring if you look at the militancy that privatisation of the railways has brought about.

Is this thread a flash from the past? New Labour has been on a neoliberal course since they took power in 1997.
