Anyone know of any good folk singers or bands, along the lines of Pete Seeger or Utah Phillips? Preferably pinko commies, please..

Much appreciated!

Woody Guthrie, who you probably know if you know Pete S.

But listen to Bob Dylans 'Time's they are a changing' which is the best album he ever did, the most folky, one of the most political, and maybe one of the best of all time

I'm tempted to reccommend something nothing like that at all. Hippy folk!

An absolute classic, most definitely!

Sorry if i'm broadening this out too much beyond your request, but Nick Drake is also very good, in a tragic sort of way. Another talent tragically dead before thirty.

EDIT: Holden's right, it was picked up on a T-Mobile advert a couple of years ago. After her first album was panned (released just after folk became 'unfashionable) she all but disappeared until Devandra Banhart got her to do some stuff on one of his albums. Her second album, released more than thirty years later, came out in 2005 to critical acclaim.

I don't listen to much folk, but Phil Ochs is truly a great musician (often overlooked, too). Great songwriting, progressive lyrics and messages...good stuff.

I got taken along to see these people play in Newcastle once, the rest of the crowd were people I usually classify as "hippy ****s" but they were really really good.

Got the hairs up on my neck and all that jazz. Sadly the myspace doesn't do them jusitice and they aren't political.

but anyways here (http://www.myspace.com/fidolamusic)

This is all very good. I appreciate it, folks! If you are so inclined to keep plugging singers, keep 'um coming!

Doc Watson has some good songs. Also, try Buffy Saint Marie, Joan Baez (im sure you already know her) and The Chieftans, those are my favorites. Oh yes...don't forget Luke Kelly and the Dubliners.

It's folksy-pop more than folk itself but I think you'll enjoy it
