By the way, I've debated about his film a few times on here, I just want to hear what you have to say about it.

I think the characterisations are awful, you feel no sense of identity with the characters, they are 1 dimensional and half the time you find it hard to recognise them.
The direction is confusing with little to distinguish the scenes and finally i think gore and gunfire is over used to cover up failings in the action.
But i did like the soundtrack.
Urban Rubble
9th June 2003, 23:25
Oh, O.K, I'll agree with you on that one. I thought you were going to come with the "It's American propaganda" arguement, which it isn't. They actually portrayed what happened pretty good I thought.
The charechters are one dimensional because there isn't alot of story in the movie other than guns blazing bombs exploding action. It isn't a war movie like say Platoon where there is more to it that the fighting, BHD was all about the actual gun battles.
I don't know, I just like war movies, they're exciting. Movies about Vietnam make me physically angry sometimes, I always wish I would've been there in the U.S army so I could just snap and take out my whole batallion, then surrender to the VC at which point they would make me commandante for taking out a whole U.S collum.
Yep, that's what I'd have done.

I thought the film was pretty fair from the propaganda department but its is just a bad film. The action is not presented well enough to let you keep an interest and you dont really care what happens to any of the characters (if you can recognise them). If its meant to be an accurate representation it lasts far too long, for a film to be effective it has to be snappy.
Hate to break it to you but the VC would have killed you, probably before you got a chance to speak, i doubt you would have been made commandante. And if you had been in the US army i seriously doubt you would have turned on your comrades, turned on men who may have been drafted, who you rely on, who you live with, who are your only companions.
The Big Lebowski
Scenario, actors, music... Everything is great in this movie.
My favourite, without a doubt.

I know, I was totally joking. But the minute I saw someone killing or raping civilains I would have shot him in the face, then I would have been shot next. I was totally joking about trying to join the VC though.
About the movie, I liked it, no big deal. There are things called opinions, just because you think the movie sucked didn't mean it sucked. It presented the story pretty much like it happened. The reason there wasn't alot of charecter development is because there wasn't some guy they could exagerrate a bunch of hero stories for. I thought the action was just fine. You say it lasts too long ? What else did you want them to show ? Soldiers shooting hoops back at the base ? The movie is about one day, that day was a full day of fighting, those soldiers were there all night.

I feel that if they were trying to create a good movie from the film ,something which would appeal theye would have had to develop the characters, develop the tension scenes.
If they were trying to present a movei which tried to simulate the dynamicism of a city battle the silm should have been made shorter. Perhaps creating more impact.
As it is Black Hawk Down is repetitive and loses whatever it is trying to do.

Anyway, La Rainbeaux, could you give me some info on Buena Vista Social Club ? I was going to buy the DVD because they had it for sale at BlockBuster for cheap, I just wanted to know a little about it.
FunkyMonk, maybe be film critic standards the movie sucked, maybe you didn't like it, but for some reason I did. Maybe I'm stupid, maybe I don't know good films, but I liked it. I'm even going to buy the new 3 disc DVD, it's got commentary from the soldiers that were there, I though that'd be interesting. Agree to disagree ?

Urban, I am Cuba is a 1964 Russian/Cuban film filmed in Cuba directed by Mihail Kalatozov, it is about pre-Castro Cuba under the control of Bastista. It is really about 5 different stories of people in Cuba and thier struggles, A sugarcane farmer whose farm is sold to United Fruit against his will, a man whose family was bombed and then he joins the revolution, and studentr activists. Its very good and it used in the first yearr of many film schools, scenes from this movie can be seen in future films too,

Im a big John Hughes fan. I think that he knows how to truly catch the essence of teenage life (for most of us)- he knows how to capture the feelings, the silliness, school, etc. Anyone could identify with any of the characters in the movie. For me 16 candles and pretty in pink are just amazing films- i think some people underestimate them as just another 80's teen movie. I actually wrote a thesis paper on Pretty in Pink for my communications class titled Womyn and Film. I could go on all day about John Hughes.

Jumping on the back of the discussion on Black Hawk Down, well, I'd say that it was quite engaging, as a run-of-the-mill war movie.
My only misgiving is that those nice chaps in the APCs who rescued the Rangers were in fact Malaysians, not Pakistanis, or anyone else, for that matter. Malaysians. You never knew about that, did you?
Our soldiers voluntarily carried out a "hot" extraction, under heavy RPG fire and across a land-mined path.
Why weren't we credited for that rescue operation?

AFI List of the 100 greatest American movies of all time (http://afi.com/tv/movies.asp)
AFI list of 100 most thrilling American movies of all time (http://afi.com/tv/thrills.asp)
Since July I've seen 57/100 movies on the most thrilling list. I must say Jaws and The Exorcist are extremely over rated but they still deserve to be on the list. So far I would say Taxi Driver and Planet of the Apes are the two best overall on the list.

I saw Wag the Dog recently for the first time... great movie.
I also saw They Live! last night on AMC... I had not seen it in a while... They had a great bit of dialogue early in the movie about executives getting bonuses while they ship the blue-collar workers' jobs overseas.

Heres my question: "Correct"?
What do you mean, "Correct"?
Vampires aren't real. They are mythical beings.

Yeah...
There must be thousands of different stories about vampires... their attributes are never consistent myth to myth. I actually dislike Anne Rice's vampire universe. Joss Whedon's universe (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) is much better--makes for better fight scenes there since sunlight is not the only way to kill a vamp...

WTF?
Somebody mentioned Monty Python. Indeed. the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, damnit, they're all great! As is the Flying Circus, despite the fact that it's not a movie.
Something About Mary sucked ass, by the way... I think.

that list sucked ass.
Something About Mary rocked. "I Said she was a butt plug"
Genius.
Anyway, some of those older movies (with the exception of THe Great Dictator and the Marx bros. movies) really aren't that funny and I think they were put on there just because.
Fargo is not funny. THe Big Lebowski is funny.
Did I see any Kevin Smith film therein?
No.
Pissed my off!

In a time when there were really no good comedies out, I stumbled upon it.
The movie may not have any substance, but it all depends on who you watch it with.
It's part of my DVD collection, that's why I added it :D
