Hey comrades!:) I need help with a project about east germany. The question is: How was religon in east germany?

Much the same as everywhere else really. The Lutheran Church was the largest religion but all the others you would expect existed too. The State obviously didn't like criticism from the Churches and kept a firm lid on that and harassed clerics they suspected of stirring up trouble, but they did not prevent freedom of worship.

This is more of an interesting tidbit than a real indicator of what kind of general stance the GDR took towards organized religion, but in East Germany they did put up several statues and murals of Protestant reformer Thomas Müntzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_M%C3%BCntzer), and even put him on their 5 East German Mark bill:

They mainly did this just because Engels discussed Muntzer in his role as leader of a peasant revolt in The Peasant War in Germany (http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1850/peasant-war-germany/).
