I'm curious to see if anyone here has actually taken up arms and been a soldier in war. Tell me about it.
Those who have not: Are you willing to?

I have not, and at the moment I am not willing to. But I feel that eventually I will be.

What will make you willing in the future? What change would need to happen inside of yourself?

I would never bring myself to murder another person.

Tasha---Do you believe Che Guevara was wrong in saying that armed insurrection is the only way to achieve justice after all options have been exhausted? Just curious.

If that means time is more important than human life then I would say yes I disagree.

Would I take up arms :YES
Would I kill someone else: YES
Would I do it right now: Nope, can't, I've got no reason too, but if I was living in a place in which this type of rebellion was neccessary, than I would. :)

I guess none of us is actually "bloodthirsty" but I'm sure that if we need to defend ourselves and others we would take up arms definitely.

Not taking up arms may 'cause a huge loss of human life, if you were to just let someone like Hitler take absolute control of the entire world.

One of the things that I read in the J.L. Anderson book about Che was about a situation during the Cuban Revolutionary War where he, for a split second, wanted to survive this particular battle. His reaction to this need to survive was something to the effect of: "I'm going to have to put a stop to that as soon as possible."
The guerrilla, according to Che, does not care if he lives or dies. He or she just cares about The Revolution.
Sometimes I wonder--- because I still have a survival need--- (though it is lessening more and more) if I'm falling short as a potential Revolutionary.
Like Redstar said in some other thread war is more than just the "parade into the capital city."

i read "the african dream" like a year ago and i think mr guevara may have changed his opinion later on. retreat is not an action of someone who does not care whether they live or die. but when you are in such a position conservation of manpower materials etc etc is crucial. also i think he noticed that a leader as important as himself is more important to their cause alive than dead. if you havent read that book yet id recommend it. the unwillingness of the congolese to fight makes me think of the americans who thought iraqis would rebel against saddam. bush should have read this book.

I think I will read that one. The example of the Congo guerrillas and the Iraqis reminds me of "blood is thicker than water." It also reminds me of couples--- some of them will fight with each other viciously. Then one of the people in the couple tells their friends all about "what an asshole" or "what a *****" the other is. Then their friends, based on the info they have been given by the couple themselves, will start to join in the badmouthing. Suddenly--- as if by a stroke of magic, the couple will defend each other in complete loyalty. It's infuriating, but true.

no one will ever mind their own business. its in peoples nature to be curious and want to fix things. damn near impossible if ya ask me.

i've thought about taking up arms numerous times. if i'd been born maybe in the 50's or 60's, and had lived through interment and the hunger strikes in my adult life, it may have turned out differently.
as it stands now. i don't think armed struggle is the right thing to do. in Ireland anyway, the peace process has to run its course. we will see what happens in the years to come.

I second that. I would prefer to be killed then to be responsible for the death of another person.

This isn't really to do with Che is it? I know it is kinda, but not enough, more about what you would do.
