Depends on the library you go to. Some academic libraries have better collections than the public ones. But in truth, I get the majority of my literature from the Internet. Library collections vary depending on how they are managed, what collections they think the public or student body has an interest, and space and maintenance issues. Some libraries are good, and some can be a bit...slim in their collections. So yeah, the Internet is helpful in making up for the shortfall.

Many free books.

Check all sections of your library though. I found Mao's Little Red Book in the Economics section  , Marx is mostly in philosophy as well.
Check the Economics, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, History sections

University libararies if you can find anyway of getting in (do you need be a student to go Uni libraries?) will probably be better too, if you live near Uni's

Some University Libraries allow the general public to check out some books (there is a limit as opposed to student and especially faculty borrowing and renewal privileges). Problem is, there is usually an annual membership fee attached with obtaining a library card, so you're not exactly checking things out for free, you're sort of renting them...which sucks...
