This was already posted in the dutch subforum, but other people might be interested as well.

The ALS, the Active Leftwing Students organised an opening evening, with discussions in Antwerp. A group of neo-nazis attacked the meeting and tried to storm the university building where the meeting was held.
Some blows were exchanged, but eventually the neo-nazis backed off.
It's quite worrying to see fascists become more and more active in Belgium.

Good to see that those fascist morons weren't able to hurt anybody or end the meeting.
I think I get by with the little Dutch I know, plus it's sometimes very close to German but I would also be thankful for an English version.

we have to meet steel toed boot with steel toed boot in this situation. The left must be able to defend itself against fascist goon squads and other forms of aggression.

This - so much this. Belgium's a little out of my range, but I wish them the best in squashing these guys utterly.

I tried to sum up the article in English a bit.
Anyway, this happened in Antwerp wich is a city notorious for having a lot of people with right-wing sympathies, so it makes sense that this kind of attack happened there.
The ALS is a group that is very active in anti-fascism, but really tries to avoid violence. That gives them the image of being 'weak leftwing students', so that makes them a prime target for this kind of attack.
That makes it even better that they didn't back down, didn't rely on the cops, but stood their ground against these fascists.

Good of them to push the nazis away.

How many times do they have to be attacked to realize nonviolence isn't really a great plan when it comes to violent people, y'think?

Well, I'm not saying they're pacifists. Clearly they're perfectly willing to fight back when they're attacked, but the general image of their group is that they're a bunch of hippie students. That's why they're a more likely target for a fascist attack then for example a meeting of anarchist squatters or socialist metalworkers.

Aye... I just have to wonder at what point they come to realize what they're seen as, and make a change.

That the comrades were able to hold off the fascists without the help of the police speaks for itself I believe.

Not to take away from it any, the fact that the neo-nazis were still able to attack them says something as well.

I feel like this kind of thing doesn't happen in the US, or am I wrong?

Only fights of any scale I've heard of tend to center around the punk scene, not so much campuses. SHARP and the like. Could be wrong though.
