Ok. So everyone post tips, links, strategies ect on how to get Published.

My first.

I was researching today during 3rd period on where I could possibly publish my poetry. I used the database here (http://www.track0.com/ogwc/resources/canpublishers.html) and picked out all the publishers who mentioned poetry in their opening and checked them out.

I have a few suggestions which were constantly repeated at the sites.

1) Never send unsolicilitated work (whatever the fuck that means).
2) Always send a SASE (self addressed/stamped envelope) if you hope to be heard back from.
3) Do your research and find out if your work is compatible with what they have already published.
4) Experience helps, for poetry it is suggested that you seek to be published in Literary Magazines before going on to a publisher, although a few take Youth and New authors as a priority.
5) Read the guidelines. They will not consider you if you send 31 pages and 5 chapters when the asked for "2 Chapters, or under 20 pages."
6) Follow the rules and the tips or else you will waste postage.

Good Luck Comrades, and keep us informed on your progress....

CANI THIS MEANS YOU!

Visit http://www.ideasfactory.com/index.htm. It's on the Channel 4 web site and I found it really helpful, especially the section where you can post a query to LearnDirect, they're really helpful with all kinds of stuff!

PS the query bit is in "Training and Courses" just so you know.

Often you already need to have short stories/poems published to attract attention, here is a list of some periodicals that publish new authors (and you often get payed too...which is good for students who need money for their educations).

I've never written anything I'd bother trying to publish.
I hate poetry.

CIKI, always so helpful!

Seeing as the first post addressed me, it would have been quite rude to ignore it.

No risk reviewing place. You have to review so many peices before you can submit one. This way you get experience reviewing (a good way to substain your self) and you get serious constructive criticism on your work. I only had one bad review out of 7 and he said mean things in about 10 ways that was basically like "this poem is to happy for my pickle-up-my-ass-self I hope you rot in hell for writing something pretty bastard." But that is only one like that and 6 extremely critical but useful reveiws.

I'm from Australia and I am currently writing a novel. I have no idea when it will be finished. From a couple of months to a year, I suppose.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of any publishers from Australia, or knows where to find them? Most of these links are for Canadians.

Thankyou.

I just got published in an anthology. I am pretty sure I am going to win some prize money too. Does that count as capitalism? I had to turn it in for an assignment. I'm not working in the press making the books so I couldn't be considered a worker...

What could I possibly publish? My works are all political essays stressing revolution and poetry portraying the life of a worker. American publishers tend to frown on that. Is there a way to get past the Patriot Act?

Well, you could always shove a sawed-off shotgun up their face and nose and threathen to pull of the trigger, no? Or just walk around it. HAHAHAHAHAH! Simplest solution. EVASION OF THE....INEVITABLE! :che:

1) Never send unsolicilitated work (whatever the fuck that means).
Unsolicilated = Stuff you wrote without the Publishing House telling you/asking you to.

Its quite a annoying factor in which you can't simply bring a book to a publisher and ask - you have to have precoordinated before writing... :(

You can always send a query first. A lot of publishing houses will read at least the first page of every unsolicited manuscript, but the odds of getting out of the slush pile are absurd. The publishing houses that don't accept unsolicited manuscripts are the ones that don't waste their time reading things that don't match their publications. They expect the writer to do the research and learn about what they do and don't publish, and when they find a match, the writer generally sends a query letter to pique interest.
