Would American government ever agree to go to a socialism society? Would they ever listen to the working class?

According to Marx, if the first step to Communism is Socialism, then how would people begin to accept socialism?

EDIT: Perhaps this should go in the "learning" section...now that I think about it

The idea is that the state would no longer exist, that it would simply not be there anymore as a result of classless society being established.

EDIT: Sorry I think I misread your question. The proletariat would take control of the means of production and over time class distinctions would cease to exist due to equal access to the fruits of labour.

No, the capitalists would not agree to a socialist society, because they will never give up their privileged position in society without being coerced by the state. Thus you need a dictatorship of the proletariat over the bourgeoisie before socialism would be possible, in other words you need a workers state to impose its will over the capitalists till a classless society is established.

The capitalists class like the landed aristocracy before them only knows might makes right, meaning they will only admit we are right when we overpower them and take away their privileged position by armed force.

The state could actually theoretically collapse. Just look at Somalia. Not that it will be replaced with anything better automatically, but it could cease to function. The state is also a pretty new (re-)invention.
