View Full Version : Book Discussion - just a thought....

I was thinking that there should be a book recommended for reading atleast every month. A book could be recommened and decided upon at the beginning of each month, or a book list could be made up from gathered suggestions. Most books will probably be leftest oriented.... but there's no problem with that ;)
Within a month, I think that 2-2.5 weeks should be designated to the reading of the book, than a thread would be started (by the recommender of that particular book) and discussion on the plot, theory, story development, charactor development etc., can begin! And then the next book will be chosen for the following reading and voila a book discussion group! :cheesy:

Anyone interested in this idea?

oh ya, and if a book list is created beforehand, it could be posted as a sticky :)

That would be great.

1984-George Orwell
Heart of Darkness-Joseph Conrad
CHE, a revolutionary life- Jon Lee Anderson

More later.

I've read 1984, and che: a revolutionary life....... but the middle one I haven't. We should find books that aren't as popular among the leftist crowd, most have read about che, and 1984, that reading is mandatory ;)

edit: But it's great to see some interest!!!!!

i propose "the animal farm"-George Orwell...

notice that in that book Orwell does nothing but distrusst the revolution..
spread Trotskist propaganda..

and making believe that stalinism only brings poverty when it was stalin who transformed a feudal russian into the XXth century...

its funny how propaganda also exists in the side of the "justīs"

A clockwork orange gets my vote! Probobly one of the best books ever!

Felicia

ok, perhaps clockwork orange should be the first book, for june?

Dirty Commie

I'm fine with that.

Felicia

oh, and remember nothing too strenuously long. With two-two and a half weeks to read it, some people have school and work and won't beable to complete longer books befroe the discussions begin and ruin the ending for them ;)

and amimal farm can be the second! :)

I vote for Ender's Game...which is anti-communist and is exactly the point for reading it. Try coming at books like that with a marxist view point. YOu analyze the hell out of them consiously and unconsiously.

anti-communist books..... barf-a-licious!

ok, it's on the list too then.

It's better to mix up the readings between books that are favourable and unfavourable to our political stance.

but I say no too american psycho.......

The most important book you will ever read, and probably one nobody has.

The People's History of the United States

by

Howard Zinn

If it is not on this list, then this message will self-destruct. :)

If not that book then let's just do Romance Novels like Danielle Steele. hehehe because that wouldn't suck at all.

How is Ender's Game anti-Communist? It doesn't have much of a left-right political stance at all. It is on progression, being left out, and athority. A great book to read while depressed though...

Oh, another good couple of books, though most of you have probably read them. The Giver, The Prince, Fahrenheit 451, and possibly Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh?

It is anti-communist in the fact that it is supported the elite staying as the elite. It shows how people can be manipulated by moral panics to be pushed in one direction, to accept the status quo. But discussions are for later. What I really meant was that it was not pro-communist (although Ender's Shadow seems to have an anti-right spin on it, although by the Shadow of the Hegemon it has disappeared).

So, discussions come later, eh? Can't wait... :)

I guess I'll have read the rest in the series by then.

Does it have to be fiction?

hmm, I suppose that it can be anything. Aslong as it's related in some way to politics or society, etc.

Right now I'm reading the social condition of humanity, which I do believe is a university text book..... which I bought - in true commie style - for 25 cents

Couldn't agree more. Read it a few months ago and it changed my thinking on pretty much everything here in this shithole.

Should be "REQUIRED" reading for any U$ citizen.

We could do it in sync with the reading list, so we go through that or something, but have a seperate thread for the book of the month and people can discuss it, then unstick it, and create a new thread for the next book and sticky it. How's that? Cos then you can look at what people thought of the old book.

And we have to encourage people to be more articulate about the books they read, often we go "yeah I read that it was good/bad (delete as appropriate)". And that's it! We need more!
