But we all love surveys regardless don't we?
I'm sorry if there are other surveys like this on here actually I'm not- I really wanted to do this.
1.) What prompted you to first get involved in Activism or the Study of politics and economics?
I was about six or seven years old and I was in elementary school. There was going to be an assembly that ran pretty much all day. If I remember correctly I was very excited the morning of. I was riding the bus and it was thundering and absolutely pouring in a neat morning spring time thundershower. It started to clear up when we got to the school.
An environmental group came in for this assembly and they were much much older but they had these elaborate stories of how corporations were destroying the earth and they had huge sea turtle and whale puppets and they acted out skits. It was so frigging cool!
I had parts of my life from there on out where I wasn't that active but when Seattle happened many many years later and there were giant puppets It brought back memories and I wondered if any of those environmental group members were there demonstrating.
Edit: I don't actually know if it was spring time or if there were giant puppets in Seattle. Perhaps it was the rain during both events. Maybe its Ka.
There was also this awesome comic book series where these kids from all over the world could turn into different animals to fight evil oil tankers and other rad shit. I don't remember the name of this comic book as it was very rare and from a small publisher for sure.
2.) In your immediate neighborhood, what are some issues that you feel need to be addressed (within the context of this forum)
Not enough community centers. Kids have no creative spaces to explore so they rely on tv role models.
"Green housing" contractors need to be dealt a reality check. The houses they're building in my immediate area are much more efficient and much better for the environment than previous houses but we don't need housing developments of them going in as fast or as large as they are.
I've done some fairly extensive conversing with local residents of lower, middle and upper income and they all tend to agree. Perhaps this offers an opportunity for a grassroots movement against sizable housing developments in this area?
The people in the lower income area where I live want to know why rent is going up and why areas previously advertised for lower income individuals like single moms and such are now being advertised as areas for college kids and mid 20's couples just starting out.
3.) If that question was too specific go for township or equivalent.
We have some issues with farming practices polluting local streams and such which then lead to larger rivers, lakes and bays. The sprawl issue was brought up by individuals in other areas too. Mainly because there are a lot of historical homes or farm houses that are being knocked down or 'drug stored'in which a historical site will be left intact but surrounded by various competing drugstores right across the street from eachother. (as well as other big box or just plain strip malls)
4.) No confidential information please but if you'd like to share the last couple things you've done for community do it here.
Volunteered time with fair housing centers and shelters.
5.) If you were placed in a strange town, how would you go about organizing or even getting involved?
The internet. Then by getting a job and talking to co workers.
6.) What are your thoughts on church groups that act as shelters and soup kitchens?
There are some VERY radical folks doing much needed work. I am not religious but I think they need to be given a lot of credit.
