View Full Version : Dune, ect ect ect - Frank Herbert
You know when you pick up a book and expect it to be amazing? Then as you read you find a sinister theme developing that completely repulses you at the same time as it captures you in its grasp? Welcome to Arrakis, the world commonly known as Dune in Frank Herbert's science fiction epic.
This novel is well written, addictively so, but stands against the ideals which I am usually pulled towards. It is about the creation of a new emperor based on the consumption of drugs. I recomend this to Dhul and Che y Marijuana in particular.

Dune is overall pretty good. I never really thought about it like that though. I think its one of those books that are fun to read, but you dont get much out of.
I really like Dune. When I was in year twelve I based an entire 'imaginative' essay around a quote from that which was "Fear is the mind killer" I think I did quite well on it...
Pete have you read the others? Messiah etc?

I didn't like the movie.

I am about half way through messiah,a nd I have a copy of the Children sitting around in my room. Today I picked something like 25 books from my mom's booksale. My friend's brother took the rest of the series though two days ago.
No book is ever 'good to read, but not anything to it' unless it is a factory book like Steven King or stuff like that. Most novels have a lot of thought and are meant to trigger the mind at different levels. Usually it takes a second reading to catch them all.

Ok, I've finished the series, like 5 times over...

All of my English teachers hated the book, they didn't think it was written well at all, they said it went far too slowly.
Ok, Dune is not about the "creation of a new emperor based on the consumption of drugs". Each book has a different reason behind it, the first was about revolution, of course. Muad'Dib is the revolutionary mastermind. His consumption of the "water of life" not necessarily ment that drugs did it. It represented a transformation of your mind, that you could see the truth. The truth was represented in the portrayal of him seeing the past, present, and future. He became "omnipotent". But he wasn't. He was only able to free his mind to the point that he saw past the lies that were layed in front of him, he reached a level of mind higher than that of those around him. Muad'Dib represents the truth of the book, and the Emperor, Tleilaxu, and the Bene Gesserit. The Emperor is overthrown, Tleilaxu and the Bene Gesserit silenced, and Muad'Dib takes the throne. Truth and freedom prevail. You're halfway through Messiah? When you finish, I'll tell you what I think it means... if you care to listen.
But through the rest of the books, the "truth" is silenced except for a few. And the series was never finished... so, we don't know how anything fares after Chapterhouse Dune.

THE MOVIE SUCKED. All of them did, the new ones from Sci-Fi are even worse than the first one. It is not a book that should be turned into a movie. It is too deep for that.

Um, the Bene Gesserit were the conflicting side. Most of what they said was wrong. Especially that. Throughout the books, those who avoided the fear, died. Those who took control of it, survived. Fear can destroy you, but it can also save you, if you use it correctly, just like anger.

English teachers do not know everything about literature. Sure the events move slowly, but look at the description of the mind. THe superfiscal plot is what you disagreed with, but these books are very very deep. Like most well written books you are left that you missed something vital, an urge to read on or reread. Some books I have read left me with the urge to burn them, but others, like Dune, make you want to read more. Herbert is excellant at this, but hardly as good as Robert Jordan. Nietzche is taking time away from Herbet, and Kurtz as well.

I am a little bit confused by your post... I didn't disagree much with the book at all. I disagreed with the Bene Gesserit and some choices that Muad'Dib made. But most of the books meanings I agreed with. I have yet to read a book that was so terrible that I wanted to burn it(I haven't read any Steven King:)) I haven't read all too many political or such books, I just bought Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzche...
A book I want to burn: many of the star wars books out there.
A book I want to burn: Culture Jam
A book I want to burn: Wuthering Hieghts (its reader involvement curve is way to high for me)

Star Wars is the opposite. It's a movie that should NEVER be turned into any books at all... Same with those Magic the Gathering books that keep poping up... I've never read any of them though(I swear).
Never heard of Culture Jam, and I'm going to read Wuthering Heights this summer.

Personaly I think that while Dune is a good book, it is not the best book ever and I probably wont be reading it more then twice. If you want a book with a empire amongst the stars read the Foundation Trilogy by I Asimov.

I don't really like Asimov very much. I read the one where they shrink the people down and send them in that scientist's body. Didn't like it that much... His writing style doesn't apeal to me much.
