Been listening over some Clash recently, and was thinking how remarkably different the albums are... If you look at the first self titled album and compare it to London Calling, they could be two different bands.

Even though London Calling i guess is the most 'commercial' of the lot... I would say, it is probably my favourite. Musically and lyrically it is amazing, especially songs like Guns Of Brixton, Death or Glory, Lost In The Supermarket, Koka Kola, Advertising and Cocaine, Four Horsemen, I'm Not Down, well i'm about to list all the tracks if im not careful...
Dont get me wrong, they did some phenomenally good albums, and those classic pop songs like Should I Stay Or Should I Go and White Man In Hammersmith Palais are even great...

That is my opinion, basically London Calling wins easily for me... and my favourite quote from Joe Strummer regarding this ’difference’ when he was asked why they arent 'punk' anymore, his response was something like 'the most punk thing we could do now was not be stereotypically punk anymore' which i thought was a great answer...

How about you? best Clash album?

My fave... like i said is London Calling, but better still then that is the 'vanilla tapes', i got it on a special edition London Calling (fear not anti-capitalists, i didnt pay the £20+ i got it from second hand music shop )...
It is the original recordings from them jamming basically... to prove to the record labels they didnt need big bucks to make a great album, and when the record label fat cats came down to see this strange notion of not pissing thousands down the drain, instead of doing the arse kiss lable loving thing so many of the punk bands went down (naming no names BUT THE JAM ) and they took em outside to play football, and gave em a propper whooping, booted em in the shins, shoved em in the mud... good ol' Joe Strummer, the most beautiful man to ever grace this earth....
the tape got lost in the archives as many things did, but it turned up sum time in the 90's on a market stall in camden labled just as 'clash recording'... but you gotta hear it, its like you can hear them building songs and fucking about n shit...

Not sure if i've posted this video before, but if you looking at this thread you gonna love this... rare as fuck, but so fucking beautiful... Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer doing Bob Marley's Redemtion Song... My mate first told me about it, he a big big Joe Strummer fan... Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash just happened to be in the BBC studios at the same time, and they both loved and respected eachothers music... so they jammed and recorded this, unofficially and never meant for general release... class...

Has to be Combat Rock, at bare minimum for "Know Your Rights" - that was the first really political song I ever heard and it was huge for me.

Edit: There's a special place in my heart for Guns of Brixton but it's just not enough to push it over the edge for me.

There was already a thread about this, but I can't post a link for some reason.

I think it's best to go chronological to hear how The Clash evolved over the years.

So start with their selftitled album.

Ghetto Defendant

Allen Ginsberg on a Clash song, lyrics about the Paris Commune - what's not to love?

I don't have a favorite album. But I've always liked "Cut The Crap" despite it's less than stellar reputation and/or circumstances surrounding it. 'This Is England' may well be my favorite Clash song if I had to choose one.
