What's the best thing to do if you're stiff the day after exercising hard? Obviously, you should stretch before and after exercising, but what if you forgot or if you did, but your still quite stiff the day after?

If you cant post serious, dont post in this forum, and especially on threads on this "nature"..
Consider this a verbal warning.

I get around this by not exercising.

Seriously though the few times I've had any sort of stiffness I've found that, after getting over the initial pain of it, stretching and limbering again helps. I don't really have much advice because I generally just soldier through it when it happens.

if you have a significant other, get them to give you a massage around the offending area using Chinese massage oil, works great for me.

:D

Deep heat is also good.

A nice, warm shower usually helps.

I use arthitis ointments for this sometimes. I tend to go with the cooling ones- the ones that heat up your skin just make the muscles feel inflamed in addition to already-painful.

I do basically most of the ones already said. Ointments that help the muscles, in direct translation we call them heating ointments im not sure how they are in english, a warm shower, and resting from more exercising for a bit.

Thanks, I was thinking that exercising a bit more might be helpfull, but that's definitely not then?

I prefer letting the muscles rest, though i think some soft exercising, and few movements may do well too, im not sure though, im not a doctor lol, just talking on my "experience".The latter is what i heard that some people may do some things, mostly a trainer can give you some moves that help, so i wouldnt disqualify absolute any exercising, though a full exercising i dont see how it would help ;)

Try stretching before you go to sleep and when you wake up.

At first, stretching before sleep may actually make you're muscles feel tighter in the morning, but after a week or so it really starts to feel better and better.

Learned that from Ricky Henderson, and he's still a fast motherfucker.

It is very important to stretch pre- and post- exercise, and always start it off with around 10 minutes of warm up at a slower pace than whatever the main thing you are doing, but just enough to get your heart properly pumping, and if you are lifting weights or having a "muscle-intensive" workout then you can buy some protein powder to help you to recover and rebuild your muscles faster.

a nice warm bath with soothe the muscles and then stretch gently. if your just bored or doing nothing stretch or watch tv while you do. it will ease down after a couple of days at the most

the stiffness often comes from lactic acid being built up. Its a by product of exercising(particularly weight lifting if i mind) so logic would dictate that taking in food after exercising that neutralise the acid is the best way to prevent next day stiffness. One of the best things that i have found is eating Bananas straight after a workout. A friend told us that the potassium reacts with the acid and hence no more stiffness next day..... worth i try mate!
