My games are messed up. I play a game and it jumps all the fucking time. I get 1 frame every four seconds in every game I play that has any sort of graphics.

Is my graphics card fucked up

please tell me it isn't

I am not expert but I think: graphic card or refresh rate of monitor (MHz).

It's only in games though.

Also: I Just opened up that computer and cleaned the dust out of it.

Dear lord all that dust.

Works fine now though. Thanks

It's true, dust causes weird and unexpected problems with computers, it's good to blow it all out every now and then, you can apparently use a toothbrush on the circuit boards (although you can damage them super-easily, don't scrape any transistors off or it's one dead machine).

Apparently it didn't fix the problem I'm having with the graphics in games stuttering a fucking ton.

When I restart, games run fine for a bit before slowly beginning to stutter, getting worse as time goes on. I figured it was overheating but all of the fans are on and working, and the machine doesn't feel that hot...

Was there a diagnostic tool that came with the graphics card? Could tell you more about it maybe.

Also look for firmware upgrades for the graphics card, check out its model number on the respective makers' website. Oh yeah, I think some games may not be compatible with certain graphics cards too, it's not exactly a widely known phenomenon but I think some games which are optimised for NVIDIAs may not work so well on ATIs..

Well these are games I've been playing for awhile that have been acting up. Various Steam games, WoW...etc.

And I don't remember any diagnostics tool. Can't find any updates.

What else can I do to figure out what's wrong?

(Nividia GeForce 8500 GT card btw)

Try searching for new drivers maybe.. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us I guess you have already though.

Also try this diagnostic tool: http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download.

Step aside fools, this is my speciality.

1) Does this only occur when playing games in fullscreen mode? Does it occur in windowed?

2) Does this happen with videos in fullscreen or windowed mode?

3) What are the specs of your RAM and CPU(s)?

4) Have you tried looking at your CPU/RAM usage while the game is acting up?

5) Try turning all the settings down and see if the problem occurs.

6) You wouldn't happen to be running these games with WINE on linux, *BSD, or w/e?

Oh well look at that. Thanks for the help, all, but I figured out what was wrong. I took the graphics card out of the computer the other day to clean the fan out when I noticed it fucking burned my hand and hurt a bunch.

The GPU fan stopped working, and now it's overheating.

Hopefully I can replace it. If not, I'll just save up for a new card once 2010 rolls around

I think the problem is that you're running MS Windows. It is well known that MS Windows will fuck your hardware up (not to mention all your software).

So, yeah, don't run MS Windows.:thumbup1:
