Got the shits, feel generally run down and my asthma's playing up. Doc prescribed me with tamiflu and told me to take at least 5 days off work.
Dunno wether to smile about the time off or cry about the impending poverty since i'll have to jump through umpteen beaureaucratic hoops to get SSP (statutory sick pay). Wankers.

You fool, now we'll have to burn the forums!
But seriously, I doubt you have swine flu. I think the doctor's would've detected it.

Then why did she let me have tamiflu?
And they discourage people from visiting clinics in case they infect other patients. All diagnoses here are done by phone.

At the clinic I work at, if the person does actually come in showing symptoms (which we discourage) they do a general lab test to determine whether or not the person has influenza A. If it shows up as positive as A at this time of year, they generally assume it's swine flu, but would need another test to prove that it is the H1N1 strain. In any event, by the time the lab results get back, it would be too late for tamiflu to be effective.
While asthma is one of the "high risk" factors that will make it more severe, your chances of becoming severely ill or dying are still very low.

You think you have swine flu.
We just had a meeting at my lab today about swine flu. Our building is conjoined with a family practice clinic, and evidently the doctors there won't even allow people with flu-like symptoms in the building; instead, the doctor comes out to their car and treats them there.
We were also told that from now on (until otherwise specified), we have to wipe down all of our equipment every two hours and wash our hands with antibacterial soap every hour. No joke.
We were also told that, if any of us even suspects we might have it, we cannot come into work, and that if anyone has a fever - whether its verified as swine flu or not - they have to wait until their temperature has been normal without taking analgesics to reduce it, for 48 hours until they can return to work.
They're really being hardasses about it, evidently the problem is more serious than I thought it was.

People are worrying way too much about swine flu. You have to remember that the media are hyping it and making it far worse than it is. Yes, people have died from swine flu, but the vast majority of people who died had underlying health problems or were very young or very old.
If we worried about every disease out there, noone would leave their homes at all.

I think I might already of had it. I'm not sure . . . I had a fever for two days + neck pain, which are now both gone. I have a pretty violent cough still.

^I keep hearing completely conflicting reports about it. Before yesterday when we had the meeting at my work, I was under the impression that it was just overhyped. Then, at the meeting, we were told weird things, like that over half the US population was expected to get it. And I work at a medical lab, which is conjoined with a family practice clinic, so I would think, if anywhere, I'd get more accurate information at work, but who knows. But for the lab techs who don't have enough sick days, the management offered to allow them to use any sick days they might need to take as vacation days, which was sort of a strange concession and the management is definitely worried about it. So who the fuck knows, I'm confused as hell about it.

The problem isn't so much its deadlyness (I believe it's not any more deadly than normal flu), the problem is economical losses if lots of workers get infected and have to stay at home. That's why they try to prevent that.

I actually got the swine while in northern Ireland myself.
They told me I could under no condition visit the clinic, gave me tamiflu after only hearing my symptoms. Freaked me out quite a bit.
I only had symptoms for about two days after I got my prescription (at least that were so bad that I wouldn't have been able to go to class/work), so I wouldn't commit yourself to having to miss five whole work days just yet

They're probably more concerned about quarantining the infection than my personal well being though.
Thing that pisses me off is i had to pay 3 quid for the prescription, the English apparently get it free.

Anyone who gets swine flu deserves it. I mean, who goes around kissing pigs that have runny noses or coughs?

I can call in sick, but it doesnt mean i'll get paid for it.
Like i said I can apply for statutory sick pay but its a minefield of paperwork, red tape and doctor's letters that i'll probably not be able to provide.

Hmmm, I think I got mine for free.
Unless the professor that picked it up for me was charged for it and didn't mention it to me
