I really, really, really suggest that you all read "Nickeled and Dimed" by Barbara Einrich (I can't remember how to spell her name! I would get the book, but its in a huge pile!)
Its amazing!!! She did this as research. She ditched her job as a writer, her apartment, and other luxuries to do see what it was like to live from paycheck to paycheck like the rest of us--- when the $ you make isn't covering the essentials. Well she goes to work at diners, a Wal-Mart (which makes for an interesting chapter), Merry Maids, and a hotel. What she experiences is amazing. She realizes that wages in american aren't livable wages, that what one makes cannot support them.
I know it sounds really tired, but I am telling you--- please read it, its great!!!
