That's like saying, why is the sun hot, or why is the sky blue..
They are crap because they lack all artistic talent, they conformed to the trend of the time to sell albums, if a band like the beatles came out today they would be a laughing stock..
Ok you know without the Beatles, none of the bands you've mentioned would've been on there.
Lack artistic talent? Why because they can't shred a million notes per second? Listen to "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Helter Skelter" without those songs heavy metal probably wouldn't have ever been made or without a song like "Day Tripper" "Birthday" "Hey Bulldog" etc etc, riff based rock probably would've been different.
Can you write a song as timeless as "Yesterday" or innovative like "Tomorrow Never Knows"? You're probably thinking of early 60's Beatles with songs like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" or "Can't Buy Me Love", which, sure sound simple, are powerful songs in their own right. For the time, no one has heard anything like it before. They changed everything you know about pop (meaning popular music including rock, blues, metal, jazz, hip hop etc). Frank Sinatra himself said the song "Something" is the greatest love song of all time.
How did they conform to the trends of the time? They started nearly all of the trends of the 60s and beyond. The album "Rubber Soul" was the pre-cursor to the entire psychedelic era. When they came to America in 63 or so, garage bands began to form as they saw the influence of the British invasion (mostly The Beatles). Many of the studio tricks you hear on "Rubber Soul" "Revolver" "Sgt. Pepper's" "The White Album" the Beatles, (with the help of George Martin) did it first.
All of the bands you have listed as your favorites had been influenced by the Beatles either directly or indirectly.
I do not care whether or not you like The Beatles, that's a matter of opinion but you cannot say they lack artistic talent. All four members (George, Ringo, John, and Paul) were all virtuosos in their own right on their respective instruments and beyond.
PS.... looking back at your list of bands, Mike Portnoy listed Ringo Starr as an influence plus a few songs took song titles from the Beatles and incorporated them into their lyrics.
Kurt Cobain says John Lennon was his idol; Jimmy Page wrote the song "Rain Song" because George Harrison told him they didn't have many ballads (plus the first couple of chords were borrowed from Harrison's "Something"); Freddie Mercury is a fan of John Lennon and The Beatles;
Pink Floyd recorded "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" (along with nearly all of their other records) at Abbey Road Studios, right next door to The Beatles during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper's (plus John Lennon can be seen with Paul McCartney is the DVD Pink Floyd live in london 66/67);
If it weren't for John Lennon and his political activism, or George Harrison's Concert for Bangledesh, Serj Tankian probably wouldn't have been so vocal or help start the Axis of Justice tour with Tom Morello;
If it weren't for the "White Album" Metallica probably wouldn't have released "the Black Album"; Chili Peppers crossed the famous Abbey Road crosswalk naked on their "Abbey Road E.P.";
The Beatles were the first to play at stadiums with over 50,000 people in attendence, if that didn't happen, Iron Maiden, KISS, Led Zeppelin, or any of the "stadium rock" bands probably wouldn't have done the same.
So once again, DO NOT say they lack artistic talent because obviously all of your favorite bands can see it.

Let me start by saying, I dont mind the early Beatles (up until about Help!) and even a few songs after that like Helter Skelter are cool but they were at their best as a skiffle/beat group.
They were kinda like Johnny Kidd & The Pirates.
John Lennon had his moments when he went solo. Yoko Ono's music is the real musical revolution.
Mostly the primal rock of The Who and The Kinks, with gritty vocals and raunchy blues of the Stones in the mix.
The Beatles were a small influence but so were Herman's Hermits.
Kurt Cobain says John Lennon was his idol; Jimmy Page wrote the song "Rain Song" because George Harrison told him they didn't have many ballads (plus the first couple of chords were borrowed from Harrison's "Something"); Freddie Mercury is a fan of John Lennon and The Beatles;
All those musicians made some of the most overrated whiney crap to ever be shoved down everyone's throat.
Pink Floyd recorded "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" (along with nearly all of their other records) at Abbey Road Studios, right next door to The Beatles during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper's (plus John Lennon can be seen with Paul McCartney is the DVD Pink Floyd live in london 66/67);
...so? Using the same studio means fuck all.
If it weren't for John Lennon and his political activism, or George Harrison's Concert for Bangledesh, Serj Tankian probably wouldn't have been so vocal or help start the Axis of Justice tour with Tom Morello;
Okay that's just bullshit. Activism is waaaaay older than even blues music let alone rock music, let alone the Beatles.
And musical activists? You've never heard of Joe Hill? Woody Guthrie? Odetta? Bob Dylan?
They all predate Lennon's activism. Which was nothing but annoying hippie crap rather than anything useful.
Yes I know Lennon was alledgelly more feared than Mao by the US, I dont care, Lennon made a handful of decent songs but as an activist he did hardly anything substantial.
The Beatles were the first to play at stadiums with over 50,000 people in attendence, if that didn't happen, Iron Maiden, KISS, Led Zeppelin, or any of the "stadium rock" bands probably wouldn't have done the same.
Yeah, fuck the Beatles for letting that happen.
Overpriced spectacles where the band is as alienated from audience as possible is hardly anything positive.
So once again, DO NOT say they lack artistic talent because obviously all of your favorite bands can see it.

I'll give you that, but who truly paved the way for The Stones, The Who, The Kinks etc etc?
All those musicians made some of the most overrated whiney crap to ever be shoved down everyone's throat. That is a matter of opinion. I was simply illustrating the influence The Beatles had on Evan's favorite bands.
...so? Using the same studio means fuck all. You don't think being right next door to the biggest band in the world at the time, making a psychedelic record, experimenting with all sorts of techniques and trickery all the while having the same engineer who worked with said band up until "Rubber Soul" is not going to have an influence on the Pink Floyd?
Okay that's just bullshit. Activism is waaaaay older than even blues music let alone rock music, let alone the Beatles.

Yes I know Lennon was alledgelly more feared than Mao by the US, I dont care, Lennon made a handful of decent songs but as an activist he did hardly anything substantial. Well no shit there was activism before the Beatles, but they truly transformed it into something entirely different. Concert for Bangledash was the first "aid" concert. John Lennon was a symbol of the anti-war, anti-establishment movement of the late 60s and 70s which the U.S. government feared! Nixon tried to have Lennon deported! But once again I was illustrating the influence the Beatles had on Evan's favorite bands.
Yeah, fuck the Beatles for letting that happen.
Overpriced spectacles where the band is as alienated from audience as possible is hardly anything positive. True (Roger Waters wrote about that during the Animals tour and turned it into the Wall, who was loosely based on Syd Barrett, who was the main lyricist and songwriter for Pink Floyd in 1967 during the sessions for Piper At The Gates of Dawn, but I'm sure you already knew that ;) )

Oh please..
The beatles are lame, and completely overrated. To say music wouldn't have evolved into the genres that exist today without the beatles is ludicrous. Sure, the beatles made a few catchy songs that were easy to remember (and thats why the sold so many albums), but if a band like the beatles came out today, they wouldn't sell a fucking thing - admit it.
It pisses me off that a lot of good bands don't get any real recognition for their musical talent, but then you look at the beatles they got too much, and for what? Simple music that any fucking mook today could compose. They were fucking overrated and if you don't see that fundamental point, you may as well be the musical equivalent of a US neo-conservative republican.

I know you're responding to others, but I'd like to make clear that I'm not defending the Beatles. I'm only saying that it's not much worse than the dork-rock that you seem to enjoy. I think the Beatles are overrated, but I don't go around about how they were "shit" in a confused attempt to sound rebellious and edgy. Who are you to judge "real music", anyway? Are all the bands you listed "real music"? Well I'll be damned.
Also, I'm not sure why you're comparing "I Saw Her Standing There" to your brand of pretentious, juvenile, 15-minute prog-metal that I stopped listening to since high school. At least the Beatles song is done in a few minutes, it sounds "catchy and easy to remember" (as you put it), therefore it does not annoy me as much as the other song you posted, which I closed as soon as the guy started singing.
As for whether the Beatles would sell anything today, I have no idea. As if "selling records at this particular point in time" has anything to do with good music, anyway. It would probably sell millions, because it's "catchy and easy to remember" and people don't have a very good taste in general, and will buy something for a variety of reasons that are not directly related to their actual enjoyment of it.
The difference is in the details. One million people will buy the Beatles record because they like accessible and catchy music. The other million will buy something from your list and feel good about themselves for listening to "real music" that does not conform to any trends and is only accessible to real music connoisseurs (please please please please please please PLEASE tell me that that was not serious). That's why there are only a few thousand bands like that, and they are only sold at every other record shop, and can only be downloaded on every bloody goddamn website. Who is fooling themselves the most?

Liking The Beatles seems to me a bit of a fashion. It goes in and out of style. There is notinhg of real substance to the Beatles though in my opinion and they weren't as influential as people will have you believe. Personally I enjoy some of their music, specifically the songs which seem to break away from conventional rock/pop of the time. But all in all The Beatles aint that great.

Chuck Berry? Muddy Waters?
The Stones and The Beatles began around the same time.
Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters were American musicians. Of course they did influence The Stones and The Beatles, but I was talking about which band led the way for the Stones and the Kinks and The Who to come to America during the British invasion?
I'll take MC5. I love the MC5 and no doubt were they connected to the new left of the time, but I guess it's more or less the use of celebrity to support a case is what I am trying to get at. John Lennon and George Harrison had a much bigger voice than the MC5
Syd Barrett's influence made Pink Floyd interesting, Umma Gumma is Floyd's best album. I dont really care for post-Barrett Floyd. I'll take Meddle as their best effort.
:confused: No it's The Clash. Duh, but the phoney beatlemania was not a knock on the Beatles but rather the lacking of substance in music/art etc during the time exemplified by the fact that broadway had a production called Beatlemania, thus is not the real thing.
;)

but if a band like the beatles came out today, they wouldn't sell a fucking thing - admit it. That's why the Beatles remasters sold over two million copies in the first week alone right? ;) (I'm not equating number of albums sold to talent by any means, but the complete catalog of the Beatles were came out this year....)
It pisses me off that a lot of good bands don't get any real recognition for their musical talent, but then you look at the beatles they got too much, and for what? They were fucking overrated and if you don't see that fundamental point, you may as well be the musical equivalent of a US neo-conservative republican. Ok... can you come up with something like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? or the entire White Album? I am not knocking Dream Theater in any sense of lacking musical talents, they are incredible at their instruments (though personally I don't care for the band too much). It's not always how well you can play an instrument, it's about songwriting.
Notice how item #1 (shit) are the beatles, whilst item #2 (good music) are dream theater. The first is an unrespectable group of conformist pseudomusicians, whilst the second are real musicians! :ohmy:

But it what they did was so liberal and soft. MC5 played at the DNC in 1968 when all the others bands were afraid to show, they lived in a squat, they pissed off corporations despite the fact it would cost them albumsales.
Duh, but the phoney beatlemania was not a knock on the Beatles but rather the lacking of substance in music/art etc during the time exemplified by the fact that broadway had a production called Beatlemania, thus is not the real thing.
I think it was more an attack on the overidolisation of artists.

Notice how item #1 (shit) are the beatles, whilst item #2 (good music) are dream theater. The first is an unrespectable group of conformist pseudomusicians, whilst the second are real musicians! :ohmy:
Simple isn't it?
Wait are you really comparing a band who could write good pop music with a band who just jacks off their instruments while everyone listening falls asleep? Really? Sure, DT are more technically proficient with their instruments than the beatles, but they don't even play the same type of music. It's silly to compare the two.
edit: wait I just read your list of favorite bands. I understand now. You have to be a joke. Yr dissing the beatles but you like metallica? You should be banned from musical discussion for being tone deaf.
I agree, Envy is a pretty amazing band.
Wait... are you talking about the Envy(Doom/screamo) band from Japan?
Yeah. post hardcore I'd call em but lots of these sub genres are a little interchangeable.

Still, I'm really a big metalhead when it comes to music, especially folk metal, melodeath, power-prog metal, etc. I also like roots and southern rock, classic rock, folk, blues, oh yeah and a REALLY obscure new age band called the Afrocelt Sound Systems. Their worth a listen, but brace yourself for the highly unusual.

To Evan:
I rather like the Beatles, and don't really like the second band you posted. So in my opinion, the first band is quality and the second band is shit. But that's just it, an opinion. The point of this thread was to post a variety of music you like, not to sit around attack people because they like a band you don't. Grow up. Everyone has different taste, for you to think yours is superior to anyone else's is just you being a pretentious prick.

It pisses me off that a lot of good bands don't get any real recognition for their musical talent, but then you look at the beatles they got too much, and for what?Personally, I like underground music. :P...but seriously, to me; listening to music is about relating to the lyrics and the stories told through music. I do like a good sound, but I won't listen to a song about something I can't relate to just because it sounds good. Sometimes, however, I won't listen to music that sounds terrible even though I can relate in anyway.
I have been told that I am picky with music, but I see it as understanding myself more because I listen to songs for their lyrical meanings.
I do like creative lyrics that are deep and well thought out. I don't like most of the lyrics that are used which are simple and shallow. Also, I like a fast and complicated drum beat. :D

It pisses me off that a lot of good bands don't get any real recognition for their musical talent, but then you look at the beatles they got too much, and for what? Simple music that any fucking mook today could compose. They were fucking overrated and if you don't see that fundamental point, you may as well be the musical equivalent of a US neo-conservative republican
So, hold on there. Define 'simple music' and define 'musician'. For example, I would regard 'Teenage Kicks' by the Undertones as one of the best singles released. Its a wonderful pop song. It has about four chords in it - does that necessarily make it bad?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oskM5XD_Yc4
Its about personal taste and what you define as music, and what you want to listen to given a particular time. I include this song because it will probably annoy you if you are so narrow-minded:

But thats not entirely correct, I would say Tool is far more my favorite then Marilyn Manson for instance (and certainly more than Das Ich or Turmion Katilot) but it only keeps track since one year and therefor I have listened an awfull lot Tool and Metallica on cd.
But my music taste has altered a lot the last two years I listen far more to Industrial than 'ordinary' metal.

I know its quite a wide range. I am a Mellencamp worshipper fan because I have a lot in common with him (Hometown, love of my homestate Indiana, political and social viewpoints, style, etc.) and I get his music all the way.

In order of how much I like them based on artistic merit, pleasant-to-listen-to-ness, and nostalgia:
1. Toby Driver (including Kayo Dot, motW, Tartar Lamb, and his solo album)
GxnqPkXT9Ng
2. Atheist (listening to this song in TuxGuitar or similar is almost as good as the actual song. It's easier to appreciate the individual parts)
sRhfl8zR-1w
3. Therion (no, I'm NOT a gnostic or a mystic, gnostic bands just have awesome music for some reason)
PeUGxPwfRyY
4. Cynic (SWIM can see... live?... become?... this cover every time he does Salvia)
9-fOpoLtj7U
5. System of a Down (I don't think they really need a video)
6. Captain Beefheart
yjZDhPqdcdA
7. Arcturus (they're reforming maybe!!! Also the lyrics to this song are from my favorite pre WWII poem, of the same name by Poe)
kmX0fc8CQiA
8. Avenged Sevenfold (this is the soundtrack of high school for me, and immediately brings back all of the passions of that time)
fQyxENKNGMI
9. Mekong Delta (I only have one of their CDs, but it has it's own extraordinarily precise brand of technical metal)
PLEASE IGNORE THE FUCKTARDED ALBUM COVER
SwyLdXvIlTo
10. Symphony X (let this one be a synecdoche for all good prog metal and the rare bits of power metal that aren't terrible)
4xyycpgmu_w
Honorable mentions to Aerosmith, Spiral Architect (despite their crazy Randroidness: I pretend to like Derrida when I listen to them), almost all 60's music and most classic rock, David Bowie, Transcending Bizarre?, and Frank Zappa.
John Coltrane, Eyedea and Abilities, and many composers would be high up on the list (probably the majority of it) if it didn't have to be a band.
DRUNK EDIT: also the offspring
