I'm just curious as to when private ownership of land and resources became the dominant form of property, especially in America. If anyone has any insight on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, if I understand what you mean, than it comes since the begining of society.
Tribal chiefs had more than simple members. Kings existed after powerful men (powerful because they were brave and led men to victory in battles) got more power.
Even peasants had their homes, eventhough the lands they worked on belonged to their lords.
Exchange started happening a lot due to commercial routes, and those peasants were able to buy their own pieces of land, and started making their own businesses.
I suppose that in America, it started when the first guys got there and said ''This is mine, this is yours etc''
